Shay Crawford and two relievers combined to pitch a two-hitter as Lee University opened its baseball season with an 11-1 home victory Saturday against Virginia Intermont. The teams will play a doubleheader today, beginning at 2 p.m.
Crawford allowed no hits and three walks while striking out six batters in his four innings. Leadoff batter Seth Walker was 3-for-5 with two doubles and five runs batted in for the Flames, who are ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, and Michael Brown, Roberto Reyes, Max Harvell and Preston Scoggins each scored twice. Brown was 1-for-1 with two walks.
* Tennessee Temple 11, Cumberlands 6: At Williamsburg, Ky., the Crusaders rebounded from two close season-opening losses Friday to beat the Patriots as Tyler Cross hit a grand slam and Chris Duncan went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Jordan Hinson was the winning pitcher, giving up three hits in six innings.
* Roane State 5-7, Cleveland State 2-6: At Cleveland, the Raiders swept the nonconference doubleheader as Justin Trent drove in two runs to back Tyler Annett's strong pitching in the first game and went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs in game two. Trevor Burgess had an RBI double and Brandon Rader was 2-for-3 with both runs for the Cougars (0-2) in the opener, and Galen Smith and Gray Hutchinson each was 2-for-3 in the rematch, Smith with two RBIs and two runs and Hutchinson with an RBI.
500 for Keylon-Randolph
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The Chattanooga State softball team improved to 11-3 for the season with two wins and a loss Saturday at the Triple Crown Tournament, giving coach Beth Keylon-Randolph 500 wins in her 10th season with the program.
The Lady Tigers' Kadey Robinson and Adrienne Lamberson combined to pitch a 5-0 shutout of Coastal Georgia, and Misha Aldridge recorded seven strikeouts in a 2-0 defeat of Florida State College Jacksonville. In between, Chatt State lost 3-2 to Hillsborough, which scored a tying run in the sixth inning and won with a seventh-inning home run.
London Germ was 3-for-3 and scored twice and Brittany Cooley had a two-run homer and an RBI single against Coastal, when Shelby Johnson was 2-for-3 with a run. Shelby Whitfield was 2-for-3 in the loss and homered along with Cooley against FSC Jacksonville.
