Baylor and McCallie fall in D-II duals semis

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- It took a takedown in the final 10 seconds by the wrong guy to keep Baylor out the Division II state duals championship match.

Battling uphill from the outset, the Red Raiders closed to within striking distance of top-ranked Christian Brothers needing a pin to win or a technical fall to tie and win on criteria.

The effort ended in a 21-9 victory, three individual match points shy of what Baylor had to have to pull off an upset and make a bid for its second straight championship.

It was sweet revenge for CBHS, which pulled out 27-26 victory. The Purple Wave lost the championship to Baylor last year.

Father Ryan, a year removed from a state championship run, simply outmanned McCallie, winning 43-21.

"We felt we had to move some guys around to try and get some upsets and they fought hard," Blue Tornado coach Mike Newman said. "Father Ryan wrestled well. They are good up and down the lineup, obviously a solid team. It helps that they have a lot of depth. He's got reserves that could place in the state tournament."

Christian Brothers has moved progressively closer to the state title under coach Chris Lewis. The Wave finished third in 2008 and 2009. They were second in 2010 to Ryan and then again last year to Baylor.

Baylor and McCallie won their first matches handily, Baylor thumping Memphis University School 79-0 and McCallie clubbing St. Benedict 52-15.
