You may have read that a federal court has blocked parts of Alabama's anti-illegal-immigration law while various lawsuits are pending.
Among other things, the court said Alabama cannot enforce a part of the law forbidding illegal aliens to conduct business with the state. We cannot imagine why a state should be conducting formal business dealings with people who have no right to be in this country.
But set aside the particulars of Alabama's law or of the laws of other states that are trying to deal with the problems and costs created by illegal immigration.
Why are the states enacting those laws in the first place? It is because the federal government simply will not enforce laws against illegal immigration -- even though that is constitutionally a duty of the federal government.
That has left states with no choice but to take action against illegal immigration because of the massive costs it imposes on them in terms of providing social services to illegal aliens.
So we could avoid a great many of the disputes between the federal government and the states on this issue if only Washington would take seriously its job of enforcing the laws against illegal immigration.
But instead, the Obama administration has ordered the review of many illegal immigration cases and the potential release of hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens back into our society.
Congress has authorized no such amnesty. But with the president undermining the rule of law, it should come as no surprise that states are doing what they must to protect themselves.

Could there be anything less productive than having different levels of law enforcement chasing after ten million illegal immigrants?
Tough employment rules with stiff penalties for employers is the only logical way to end undocumented workers. An employer who knows that he will be fined or possibly jailed for employing undocumented workers will not take the risk.
Thw current process is a failure.
Formal? The law banned ANY business transactions, which is a pretty broad claim there, and no, they weren't specific about it in the law.
It'd make it a felony to get a library card for an illegal immigrant. That's pretty broad criminalization. I think maybe the court might have been persuaded that Alabama did a terrible job writing the law in that section.
But you want to know why the Obama administration has done what they have? Because they want to concentrate on the criminals among the illegal immigrants, and not waste time with people that don't cause harm compared to the actual criminals.
It's like how a police officer will let a speeder go to chase down a bank robber.
Obama has failed his duty to faithfully execute the nation's laws in breathtaking cases for purely political reasons. This is an impeachable offense. Our elected representatives are lacking something in the manhood department.
If they didn't impeach the presidents before Obama, why now?
Or do you think there are a significant number of illegal immigrants since 2009?
Maybe they should impeach themselves for gross incompetence?
happy, you are avoiding the issue. The reason for states enacting these laws is the failure of the Federal Gov. to enforce federal laws. This is the impeachable offense.
To allow illegal immigrants the right to conduct business within a state implies the rights of citizenship and those rights that should only be afforded to citizens. To conduct business an illegal immigrant will need a drivers license and a social security card which can only be obtained by illegal activity. That illegal activity includes committing Identity Theft or random use of a social security number.

Note: the woman who applied for work at Target and was denied employment “She already worked there -- or rather, her Social Security number already worked there.
Follow-up investigation revealed the same Social Security number had been used to obtain work at 37 other employers, mostly by illegal immigrants trying to satisfy government requirements to get a job.”
