Chattanooga officials met today to talk about how Mayor Andy Berke’s new budget would be different from previous city government budgets, however, no details were revealed about details.

Next Tuesday council members get a budget overview, which will include a focus on outcomes will receive a binder and get a presentation of the budget, which is similar to how many corporations run their businesses based on manageable outcomes and is similar to what some cities across the country have began to embrace.

In May, Berke asked for an extension to build the budget and he was given 90 days.

City Chief Operating Officer Andrew Kean told the council today in a working session that the Mayor’s office has evaluated the functions of city departments and they will begin to align with what the community has expressed desire to see.The budget will then reflect those differences.

“It will look completely different than it has in years past,” Kean said.

When Chairman Yusuf Hakeem asked if the council would get to hear any details of what’s inside the budget ahead of time, Kean told him “No.”

Councilman Larry Grohn asked how the Mayor’s office plans to keep transparency within departments, where employees will have to now show outcomes to justify their budget.

Kean said it was premature to talk about that.
