CD Reviews: Herb Alperts Tijuana Brass

Whipped Cream and Other Delights Re-Whipped

Filed by M. Trevor Higgins

New Release

Few albums are summed up in their cover art as Herb Alperts 1965 Whipped Cream and Other Delights. The classic image shows a woman covered in whipped cream holding a flower in her left hand and licking the index finger of the right. Similarly, the album is sexy, sharp and a little cheesy.

And just as how the original has found a second life as wall art for college students and young professionals, the music has been resurrected by producer Anthony Marinelli and a host of other remixers on Whipped Cream and Other Delights Re-Whipped.

The cover art this time features, again, a slim brunette. Her whipped-cream ensemble is reduced from gown to bikini, but she stills has that right index finger near her mouth.

Alperts horn is again present at the forefront, and his solos, some of them played anew, are still fresh. The remixes, at times, sound a little stale, mostly processed drum loops and a horn echo. This isnt Herb Alpert gone techno.

But this doesnt really matter. The album still sounds sexy and sharp. Its cooler than the first time around, and a little smokier. This is what you put on at 3 a.m. after a night on the town. The album flows smoothly from track to track and the new takes give it a very complete feel; it plays like one solid performance.

The standout tracks come from the bolder DJs. John King of The Dust Brothers seductively guides A Taste of Honey, bringing in Alperts horn in passionate bursts. Ozomatlis Love Potion No. 9 pours smoothly through the headphones.

Medeski Martin and Wood balance El Garbanzo between playfulness and complexity. Thievery Corporations Lemon Tree is exotic and mystical.

So while the album isnt a complete overhaul, Alperts body of work has definitely been given a new engine with many of smooth miles on it.
