The Rock and Roll Easter Bunny dropped off an early gift to the newsroom this morning.
We received an early copy of the Drive-by Truckers new album, A Blessing and a Curse, which hits CD racks on April 18.
The Truckers are frequent visitors to the Scenic City and full disclosure one of my favorite bands. This new release does nothing to change that, as its full of pretty ballads and concise rockers.
Its also very accessible, a trait lacking from much of the bands earlier albums. First single Feb. 27 and my favorite Wednesday are two short, driving numbers that could land the Southern rock band on Top 40 radio.
It wouldnt be the first time a recent independent act jumped into the sea of mainstream success. Modest Mouse, an indie rock band that had built a loyal following among hipsters and music critics, scored a huge hit single with 2004s Float On.
And Hasidic Jewish rapper Matisyahu is well on his way to stardom with his recent recently album Youth.
I hope the Truckers cruise to mainstream success with the upcoming album. Having captured the hearts of critics, now its time to shake up the derivative play lists of pop radio and win some new fans.
