Editor's Note

Sharing experiences & creating new memories in the outdoors.

Are you a weekend warrior tearing up the hiking trails? Do you spend your spare time at the local outfi tters daydreaming of the equipment you’ll need for your next adventure? Maybe you just wish you had more time to start getting active, or you would like to begin making memories with your family in the outdoors.

For me, growing up in this area, I spent most of my summers swimming in the lake and camping and hiking in the woods around Chattanooga. I was blessed to have a father who loved the outdoors and would take my sister and me on many weekend adventures. Our trips taught me to respect the peacefulness and adventure nature offers. Now that I have a son, we spend our weekends hiking the same trails and sharing the same experiences.

The opportunities in Chattanooga for family recreation and outdoor activities were endless; they still are.

The sheer number of natural wonders in and around Chattanooga is astonishing. From fi shing, rafting and water skiing to hang gliding, caving and rock climbing, Chattanoogans can stay active year round, and though I believe most of us are familiar with this area’s natural attractions, I’m sure not everyone is.

So, what about those of you who aren’t tearing up the trails? We have the following pages fi lled with a wide sampling of outdoor activities that would suit anyone from novice to expert. We even found several activities for those of us with children in tow, like myself.

From a personal standpoint, our parks are extremely important. I want my child and yours to be able to enjoy these natural resources for years to come. I believe the key to ensuring their longevity is awareness. The more we use and enjoy these spaces, the better our chance that they’ll remain an integral part of our communities. These are our resources to protect.

All of the parks and waterways you and I played in as a child are still here and incredibly many have remained untouched by time. Why not get out and get active? Take some time to create new memories and we’ll all reap the benefi ts by keeping our parks viable. You deserve it.
