Chattanooga: Mighty Sideshow’s third time is a ‘Charm’

Alan Whitener Q&A

For the completion of their release hat trick, local hard-rock quartet Mighty Sideshow are releasing the appropriately titled “Charm.”

The 10-track follow-up to 2004’s “Dare You To Think,” will release tonight during a triple bill with Saving Abel and Deepfield at Midtown Music Hall.

Alan Whitener (lead vocals/rhythm guitar) said the eight months recording putting “Charm” together has resulted in a project the band can be proud of.

“Everything was smooth, and closer to the end of the recording with the newer songs we’ve done, things really started taking shape,” he said. “We didn’t just go in and do everything at once.

“We wanted the album to be good, so we waited on the people we needed to wait on.”

The album was recorded at Atlanta’s Cock of the Walk Studio, which is owned by Jesse Dupree, lead singer of the Southern hard-rock band Jackyl.

“Torn in Two,” the album’s first single, already is receiving significant radio play on active rock stations in West Virginia with Midwest stations poised to follow suit, Whitener said.

“Charm” is a more aggressive-sounding project than the band’s previous efforts. Initial feedback has been positive, and the band expects critical response any day now.

“The people that have heard it are definitely getting the recognition we wanted out of them,” he said. It’s new and it’s not been in a lot of people’s hands, but our advance copies have gone out, so we should start hearing back from stations and critics soon.”

The only goal Sideshow set themselves for this project was to put out the best album possible, and in that sense, the third time really was the charm, Whitener said.

“You want every album you do to be a step up from what you did the last time,” he said. “ ‘Charm’ is definitely that.”

WHAT’S NEXT

“We just recorded a song for a producer in Nashville, which, as weird as it might sound, is for a porn star, Brianna Banks,” said Mighty Sideshow lead singer Alan Whitener. “We’re waiting to hear back from her attorney if he likes the song. If so, we’re going to shoot a video with her — not a porn, a music video.”
