Obituaries for August 4, 2008
HAMILTON COUNTY
Robert Barry
Robert Stanley Barry, 71, went home to be with our Lord on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, after a long and valiant battle with Parkinson's disease.
Born in Chattanooga on March 4, 1937, to Mildred and Eulis Barry, he grew up in Lookout Valley. He graduated from Central High School in May 1955 and enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 19. During his time in the armed forces, he was assigned to the 714th Tank Battalion. He was stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany, for 2 1/2 years and was discharged from active duty in 1959. He remained a member of the inactive reserve and received an honorable discharge in June 1962.
He met the "love of his life," Billie Carolyn Morgan, when he was 19 years old (she was 16). He said it was "love at first sight and she was the most beautiful girl that he has ever seen." In a recent note found in his papers, he had written of his wife "she is as beautiful on the inside as on the outside and the wife that most men only dream of having." Billie has been an incredible support, living by his side each day and supporting him with a positive attitude and strength that came from her true abiding love. She took the marriage vow of "through sickness and through health" to heart, and kept her husband comfortable and happy through his very difficult illness.
His professional career started with Standard Brands. He progressed through various positions within Standard Brands and Food Service division of Nabisco Foods. He retired from Nabisco as regional sales manager in 1995. He was very proud of his career and always spoke in high regard of his work friends and associates.
He was a member of Shades Crest Baptist Church in Hoover, Ala.
Stan and Billie raised two children, Stan Jr. (Stephanie), of Greenville, S.C., and Mark Barry (Lisa), of St. Louis, Mo. He was very proud of his four grandchildren, Bryant, Anna, John and William. He is also survived by his sister, Lillian Watson, of Lookout Valley.
Visitation will be held today, Aug. 4, at Southern Heritage Funeral Home from 4-6 p.m. with a memorial service immediately following.
Graveside service will be held at at 10 a.m. EST Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Auchmuty officiating.
On behalf of our father, his children would like to thank all of you for your prayers. Dad valued each of your friendships more than words can express.
"When you were born, you cry and the world is happy, when you die, the world cries and you are happy."
In lieu of flowers to the National Parkinson Foundation Inc., Office of Development, 1501 NW 9th Ave./Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL 33136-1494.
