FedEx Kinkos is changing its name to FedEx Office and is undergoing a global expansion effort that includes a new store on Gunbarrel Road.

The store, located under a FedEx Kinkos awning at 1906 Gunbarrel Road, already is operating under the FedEx Office moniker, but store manager Clela Stevens said changing the signage could take a while.

“We are FedEx Office now,” she said. “The actual re-branding is a multiyear project.”

Courtney Reese, a spokeswoman for FedEx Office, said the Gunbarrel Road location is one of 450 new office and print centers FedEx has opened since June 2006. More are planned, including one in Memphis scheduled to open in October.

The new Chattanooga location is about 2,000 square feet, which FedEx Office officials call their “compact car” footprint.

“We use the smaller scale so we can put stores in more convenient locations,” Ms. Stevens said. “Much of the businesses are coming out in this area, so we are just glad to be of service to them.”

The smaller office center still offers the same services as larger stores, she said, adding that the smaller format office centers offer more retail items geared toward people who travel or work from their cars.

“We have all the same services. We just do it on a smaller scale,” Ms. Stevens said.

The “compact car” format also focuses heavily on FedEx’s pack and ship business.

Rather than putting packages in one of the many drop boxes located around the area, Ms. Stevens said many people are more comfortable leaving their packages with a real person.

Ms. Reese declined to say how much the new store cost or say how much FedEx was spending on its global expansion project.

The Gunbarrel Road location opened July 28 and plans a grand opening ceremony on Thursday.
