The only thing Patrick Moore failed to do for Central High School in Saturday’s Victoryswap.com football jamboree at Finley Stadium was help the cheerleaders.

The quarterback/safety intercepted a pass, threw for 10 yards and rushed for 80, including the deciding 4-yard run with 42 seconds to go in the Purple Pounders’ 12-7 victory over Silverdale Baptist Academy.

Moore is one of only five seniors on the team, causing a lot of excitement in the voice of coach David Barger.

“We’re such a young team, so I’m proud of our guys for getting a win,” Barger said.

Junior Jonathan Robinson gave Central a 6-0 lead with a 45-yard run on the team’s second possession.

Moore also ran down Seahawks tailback Tyler Barnett on a breakaway, much to the delight of Barger.

“Last year, we would have let him score,” the coach said.

The 57-yard run gave the Seahawks the ball on the 13, and senior Edgar Montgomery later scored from 5 yards out. The extra point gave Silverdale a 7-6 lead.

Moore then led the Pounders downfield. He started the drive with a 45-yard run, and after runs by Robinson and Preston Womack, the quarterback jogged in for the go-ahead score.

David Brainerd found a new option for its offense in senior tailback Denzel Lowery, who had 93 yards rushing and the game’s only touchdown in a 6-0 victory over Chattanooga Christian, a new program.

“He did a good job running the ball,” David Brainerd coach Tawambi Settles said. “We like to throw the ball and haven’t really had a productive running attack before, but Denzel’s done a good job of working to get better, and it showed.”

Bradley Central and Tyner battled to a 7-all tie. Bradley tailback Deonte Lindsey broke a 72-yard touchdown run that included a nice cutback midway through. The Rams responded with an 11-play drive that Michael Poarch capped with a tying 5-yard run.

“I like the way we battled back, took the ball downfield and scored,” Tyner coach Wayne Turner said. “It was a real gut-check; we need people to step up and answer the call, and they did.”

Bears coach Damon Floyd wasn’t pleased with two turnovers by his team, but he liked the way his offensive and defensive lines performed.

“We have a lot of experience up front, and they did a good job,” he said.

Floyd was also pleased with the job Lindsey did running the ball. The senior tailback finished with 84 yards on the ground.

“Deonte’s a year older and has a lot of God-gifted ability,” Floyd said. “He can do a lot with the ball in his hands, and we have to find ways to get it to him.”

Grace Academy pulled off the night’s upset with a 7-6 win over Hixson. Hixson’s Wildcats cruised downfield on their first drive, using only three plays before Kris Taylor scored on a 24-yard run less than two minutes into the 20-minute quarter, but the extra-point kick failed.

The Golden Eagles came back downfield, using a 31-yard run by Cody Cross and a 17-yard run by quarterback Josh Blake to take the ball to the Hixson 3. The Wildcats had a pair of stops, but on third down Blake hit Caleb Rogers for a 1-yard scoring pass. Hunter Payton’s extra point proved to be the difference in the game.

“I think we responded well after they took the ball downfield so easily,” Grace coach Mark Mowery said. “We were very resilient. I think we were a little nervous about playing a 4A school, but we came back well.”

The Cleveland Blue Raiders held off Howard 7-6 in a clash of teams with big expectations for this season. Region 4-4A favorite Cleveland looked sharp in its first drive, going 67 yards in six plays. Sophomore Isaiah Nichols scored from 6 yards out.

The Hustlin’ Tigers got a score on their third drive. Michael Bryant hit Jahron Reynolds for a big 36-yard gain on a third-and-20 play, and the two hooked up again for an 11-yard score. Again, a missed extra point proved to be the difference in the matchup.

“We just wanted to come out and see how our kids would react, and I think they played pretty well,” Cleveland coach Danny Wilson. “We’ve got some players out right now, but the guys we put in their place responded well.”

Senior tailback Monte Scotton, the area’s leading returning rusher in 2008, and junior wingback Terrell Parks missed the game for Cleveland with injuries. Both are expected to be back for the opening game against Bradley Central.

In the nightcap, McMinn County and Red Bank battled to a 7-all tie. McMinn’s Cherokees looked strong early, scoring on a 7-yard run by Tevin McDermott, but the Lions got on the board in the final two minutes when Andy Christopher found Kelvin Clay wide open down the right sideline. The junior did the rest for a 90-yard touchdown play.
