This year, festivalgoers can be shuttled via water taxi from Coolidge Park on the North Shore across the Tennessee River to the festival site at Ross’s Landing. The Fat Cat Ferry will begin transporting festivalgoers one hour before the opening of the festival (1 p.m.) and return every hour until one hour after the close of the event (1 a.m.). All-day passes cost $6 for adults, $4 for children. For more information, call 756-5060.
TWO-WEEK BREAK FOR RIVERFRONT NIGHTS
The Riverfront Nights concert series, normally held on Saturday nights, has been suspended the next two weekends for the Southern Brewers Festival at Ross’s Landing and the Swingfest celebration at Coolidge Park. The series resumes Sept. 5 with Chicago-based bluegrass band Cornmeal.
Beer lovers will be in heaven this weekend when the 14th annual Southern Brewers Festival takes place at Ross’s Landing.
Twenty-one regional brewers will have 42 handcrafted ales and lagers on hand for sampling.
Each $15 ticket buys entrance, a mug and one beer token. Each additional token is $3. All proceeds will benefit Chattanooga Kids on the Block.
Local brewers participating in the festival include Big River Grille & Brewing Works, Barley Mob and Mocassin Bend Brewing Co.
In addition to beers for sample, the festival, which is open to visitors of all ages (ID required to taste the various brews), will offer nonalcoholic beverages, food and music.
Headlining the event are the Eugene, Ore.-based Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, whose 1997 “Zoot Suit Riot” catapulted the band into the Top 40 during the swing revival of the late ’90s. Also appearing are Pat McLaughlin of Nashville and the Dallas-based Stratoblasters.
New this year is the availability of a Party on the Pier Pass. For $75, patrons can enjoy complimentary food and beer all day. Prizes, including 20 guitars from Volkswagen will be awarded throughout the day. T-shirts can be purchased for $10.
Brave souls may attempt to stuff their faces to glory in the first-round competition for national Krystal Square Off eating contest.
According to Kelly Williams of Chattanooga Kids on the Block, the festival originated as a way to teach people about handcrafted beers. CKOB uses puppetry to teach children about social differences and empowerment.
