The sale of Chattanooga State’s radio station WAWL-FM 91.5 to Family Life Radio was finalized Wednesday and the station no longer is broadcasting over the air, spokeswoman Eva Lewis said this morning.

The station is, however, streaming live on the Internet at wawl.org, she said.

Family Life Radio agreed to buy the station’s license in March for $1.5 million. Family Life is a Tucson, Ariz.-based, Christian-programming radio company with 19 stations across Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Nebraska, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia and Florida

“As of (Wednesday) at 5 p.m. the closing was final and WAWL has gone off the air with the license officially transferred to Family Life,” Ms. Lewis said in an e-mail.

Family Life will begin broadcasting Jan. 2, according to Bobbie Rill, community transformation coordinator.

Chattanooga State President Dr. Jim Catanzaro has said that selling the station and moving to a Web-based format will allow the school to integrate the television and radio classes into the old WTCI building, involve more students and create more learning opportunities.

“It also helps us deal with a tightening budget,” Ms. Lewis said.
