Scouts earn top awards

Troop 58

Carlton Smith earned his Eagle Scout award during a Court of Honor at Red Bank United Methodist Church.

The son of Keith and Jane Smith attends Red Bank High School.

For his community service project, the Eagle Scout constructed a newspaper recycling station at Red Bank United Methodist Church under the guidance of troop leaders Kirk Eidson and Scott Hardin.

Troop 970

Jacquelyn Ryan Cox, daughter of Jonnie Cox, has received her Girl Scout Gold Award.

Miss Cox is a senior at Notre Dame High School, where she is president of the Young Democrats, a member of the NDHS Theatre, National Honor Society, Student Leadership Council, Beta Club, Green and Gold Ambassador Club, Mu Alpha Theta Math Club, Chattanooga Theatre Centre TheatreQuest and Creative Discovery Museum apprentice program.

For her community service award, the Scout designed and installed a water system to the roof of the Creative Discovery Museum for easier plant watering. The project renovated an unused section of the roof, with the purpose of drawing more attention to the CDM’s bee exhibit by showing children the relationship between plants and bees.

Troop 82

Drew Johnson earned his Eagle Scout ranking during a recent Court of Honor at Harrison United Methodist Church.

The son of Alex Johnson and Gigi Johnson is a graduate of Boyd-Buchanan School and now attends Emory & Henry College. At Boyd-Buchanan, he was a member of the football and wrestling teams and won the All-City Defensive Tackle Award.

For the community service project required of all Eagle Scouts, Mr. Johnson rehabilitated the Friendship Baptist Church cemetery, which had become overgrown and many of its monuments knocked down. The project involved cutting down trees, digging up and removing root systems and brush, replacing fencing and putting monuments back in place.
