Sheriff had jail tour scheduled

Before he was arrested Saturday on federal extortion, money laundering and gun charges, Sheriff Billy Long was scheduled to take some Hamilton County students to the county jail to show them what happens to adults who commit crimes.

Hamilton County Commissioner Greg Beck said Thursday the sheriff planned to give the tour in order to reach 1,000 young men.

“We want to spend some time in the courtroom seeing how that process is done,” Mr. Beck said.

Sheriff Long attended Thursday’s commission meeting to answer any questions commissioners might have.

“We’ll either get on you about something or brag on you,” commission Chairman Bill Hullander told the sheriff at the meeting.
