Moore trumps Dorn slam
Danny Dorn’s home run to right-center field in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday night provided four runs for the Chattanooga Lookouts.
Adam Moore’s homer to left in the top of the ninth accounted for only one for West Tenn, but it was the difference as the Diamond Jaxx pulled out an 8-7 victory at AT&T Field. Normally Moore would have been thrilled with the finish, but Tuesday’s game was anything but normal.
“It was definitely a relief, to be honest with you,” Moore said of his solo shot. “After that grand slam Dorn hit, we were like, ‘Here we go again.’ We’ve been struggling, but I got a chance with a full count. I just wanted to get it done somehow, and luckily I got the pitch to do it with.”
The grand slam was the first this season for Dorn, but the thrill was fleeting.
“We had some good momentum,” he said, “but then that guy took a good at-bat off of Pedro (Viola). He crushed that ball.”
The exchanging of homers between Dorn and Moore resulted in a win for Diamond Jaxx reliever Marwin Vega, who was tagged for five runs in a horrific eighth inning.
Chattanooga dropped to 6-8 in the Southern League’s second-half race and trails Tennessee by four games in the North Division. West Tenn, the first-half champ, improved to 5-9.
Lookouts starting pitcher Ben Jukich had his worst statistical night of the year, allowing a season-high six runs and matching a season high with eight hits allowed. He also had four walks to just two strikeouts.
Jukich has allowed four or more runs five times this season, with West Tenn accounting for three of the five.
“He’s a really good pitcher who has command of all of his pitches,” Moore said. “He keeps you off balance. We hit a couple of his mistakes tonight, but when he’s not making mistakes, he’s tough to hit.”
Said Lookouts pitching coach Chris Bosio: “We had a couple of double-play balls that we couldn’t make the plays on, and then he wasn’t able to make some pitches that he needed to make. I thought Jukich battled his butt off, but it was just one of those nights when we didn’t play real well and beat ourselves.”
Lookouts third baseman Drew Anderson had a throwing error on a potential double-play ball in the fourth inning, which helped cleara the way for three West Tenn runs and a 5-1 lead.
Camilo Vazquez, who made 11 starts with Chattanooga two years ago and 21 starts last year, is scheduled to start today’s 12:15 game for the Lookouts. Vazquez was promoted Tuesday from high Single-A Sarasota, where he was 4-2 with a 4.80 ERA through 20 games (four starts).
He is taking the roster spot of Sam LeCure (7-4, 3.46), who has gone on the disabled list with a strained left knee.
