Lemon dropped from University of Georgia football team

University of Georgia football coach Mark Richt announced Sunday that sophomore defensive end Michael Lemon has been dismissed from the team.

The 6-foot-4, 274-pound Lemon was arrested July 3 for felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor battery, charges stemming from an on-campus incident on June 28 in which he allegedly hit a fellow student several times. The student was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment and suffered a fractured eye.

“He’s been dismissed as a result of some poor decisions and conduct that is not in line with standards we have in place at Georgia,” Richt said. “I have had discussions with Michael, and he understands the decision. He expressed a desire to find a path back to the team at some point, but that’s a decision that will depend on several factors and will come at a later date.”

Lemon played in eight games last season and tallied seven tackles.
