Chattanooga woman critical after being stabbed during carjacking

A Chattanooga woman is in critical condition after a carjacking and stabbing Tuesday night.

Sonya Burton told police she was stopped at 1600 Anderson Ave. about 10 p.m. when a black male jumped into her car from the driver’s side and forced her into the back seat, said Chattanooga Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary in a news release.

As the man began to drive away, he started stabbing her and then crashed the vehicle at 1005 S. Hickory St., she told police. Ms. Burton said she was able to get out of the car but collapsed across from it.

Police responded to the scene and found her lying near the car. She sustained stab wounds to her head, neck and shoulder area and was taken to Erlanger hospital, Sgt. Weary said.

Witnesses said a black male, between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall with a muscular build, low hair cut, white tank top, blue jeans and white tennis shoes was seen running from the scene. Investigators are working to find the suspect in this case, Sgt. Weary said.
