THE HALF CENTURY Club held its annual picnic at Alhambra Shrine Temple. Nearly 250 people attended, said Bob Elmore, club past president.

Clarinest Jay Craven, who provided musical entertainment and “inspirational tales” from his 12 years as a volunteer at Memorial Hospital, was honored, Mr. Elmore said.

Mr. Craven has played with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera for 50 years and was recently named to the Tennessee Music Education Association Hall of Fame.

“He just released his sixth CD featuring the music he played at Memorial,” Mr. Elmore said. Proceeds from the sale of the CDs, which are on sale at Memorial and Northpark Hospital, will benefit the Memorial Auxiliary.

The Half Century Club was founded in 1936 for men who have lived in the Chattanooga area for a minimum of 50 years. TOASTS

CHATTANOOGA-HAMILTON County Bicentennial Library recently received national recognition from the American Library Association for the promotion of its 2007 Club Lib fundraiser, said library official Andria Davis.

“The library is the winner of the 2008 Best of Show competition in the fundraising materials category in its respective budget range,” she said, noting that more than 360 entries were received in the competition from across the United States and Canada.

The winning entry, the 2007 Club Lib party invitation, was designed by Club Lib volunteer Lin C. Parker, design editor for the Chattanooga Times Free Press. Jones Printing produced the invitation.

David Clapp, library director, attended the Best of Show Awards Ceremonies to receive the award in Anaheim, Calif., while attending the American Library Association annual conference.

“We are proud to receive such national recognition and are very grateful to our Club Lib volunteers,” he said. “The incredible talent and vision of our volunteer committee make our fundraiser, Club Lib, such an amazing success every year.”

Club Lib, the library’s signature fundraiser, raises muchneeded funds to expand the library’s collections, the news release noted. The event has raised more than $200,000 since the first fundraiser in 2006.

Club Lib Volume III is scheduled for Oct.18.
