Chattanooga: AT&T hit hard by rain

It stopped raining an hour before Tuesday night’s game between Chattanooga and West Tenn at AT&T Field, but the damage already had been done.

Too much rain in too short a period of time equaled a cancellation.

“In nine seasons, we’ve never seen rain go into the clubhouse,” Lookouts owner Frank Burke said. “It rained that hard that fast, and with both managers worried about the outfield, the last thing we needed was somebody to get hurt. This was the worst one I’ve seen here. It rained sideways for more than an hour.”

The rain was so significant that the water level of the toilets in each dugout was matched by the water level surrounding them.

Chattanooga and West Tenn will play as scheduled today at 12:15 and will play a pair of seven-inning games Thursday night. The first will begin at 6:15.

The Lookouts and Diamond Jaxx had off days Monday and received three days off early last week for the Southern League’s all-star break.

“Playing the kind of games we just played in Mobile, where it was some kind of hot, I don’t think it’s going to hurt our ballclub whatsoever,” Lookouts manager Mike Goff said, “and having an early night before a day game will help out.”

Lookouts pitcher James Avery (6-6, 5.28 ERA), who was scheduled to start Tuesday night, is expected to start today. Thursday’s starters for the Lookouts are scheduled to be Travis Wood (2-5, 6.13) and Sam LeCure (7-4, 3.75).
