Chattanooga: Baseball, softball teams to face off

Select softball-turned-baseball coach Dave Breckinridge has teamed up with with former coaching partner Pat Moyer to revive the Battle of the Sexes softball series at Frost Stadium.

Breckinridge’s Chattanooga Baseball Club will play Moyer’s 18-under Gold and 16-under Fury Fastpitch teams in a doubleheader Tuesday starting at 6:30 p.m., with a portion of the proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Breckinridge and Moyer formerly coached the Yankettes with a core group of seven, including their daughters, Katie Breckinridge and Ashley Moyer, playing together from 10-under to 18-under. Dave’s current baseball team is a collection of 17-year-olds that includes his son, Scott, who attends Notre Dame.

Moyer partnered with Jeremy and Jill Higdon and started the Fury organization in 2006. They will coach the 18-under Gold team and Moyer and Mike Johnson will direct the 16-under team.

Former East Ridge and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga standout April Miller will be among the guest pitchers for the baseball team. Her batterymate will be her brother, Gunner, who will be a senior at East Ridge next school year.

Former local prep players Tiffany Walker from Grace Academy and Ashley Boyd and Laura Moore from Dade County also are scheduled to pitch for the boys.

The 18-under Fury features a roster of 14, and 12 of the players were on high school state-championship teams, including the pitchers. Moyer said Holly Thomas, a recent Ooltewah graduate and Tennessee Tech signee, will start, and Red Bank graduate and Tennessee State signee Kelly Troglin will likely pitch, too.

“They have some really exceptional baseball players, but I don’t know,” Moyer said. “We have Holly Thomas. I like our chances.”

Seating is general admission and tickets are $7. The gate opens at 6.

Moyer said about 1,200 tickets have already been sold. Additional donations to the foundation can also be made throughout the game.

“I want our players to understand that it’s important to support programs like Make-A-Wish,” Breckinridge said in a news release. “There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a child be granted their wish, and if we can raise enough money to grant a wish or two through this event, then this will have been a huge success.”
