Minnie Carter

Minnie Mae Carter, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2008, in Newport News, Va.

She was a graduate of Howard High School and attended Clark College in Atlanta. During World War II, she left college to work for the Office of War Information in Washington, D.C.

She was preceded in death by son, Douglas Shearer Carter; her parents; her brothers and sisters including Roberta Chubbs and Zora Clark.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of more than 62 years, Frederick Douglass Carter; daughters, Kathleen Patrice (Thomas) Harmon, of Newport News, and Leslie Diane (Kenneth) Clark, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; son, Holman Frederick Carter, of Boulder, Colo.; a host of other relatives and friends, including cousins, Cyrus and Roland Carter, of Chattanooga.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or charities of their choosing.

Brandon Castaneda passed away at his home, Friday, June 6, 2008.

Vince Claeys

Vincent Claeys, 81, of Ooltewah, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2008.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II.

Vince retired after working many years as an over-the-road truck driver.

He was the son of the late Robert and Glee Claeys and was preceded in death by his wife, Georgie Claeys; brother, Donald Claeys; and sister, Donna Jean.

Survivors include his two children, Terry Claeys, of Ooltewah, and Linda Khettry, of Ridgewood, N.J.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Wayland Stewart officiating.

Paul J. Dilliard, 47, of Ooltewah, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2008.

Harold Drennon

Harold E. Drennon, 80, of Chattanooga, died Friday, June 6, 2008, at his home.

Born Sept. 27, 1927, he was of the Baptist faith.

Preceding him in death were his mother, Beatrice; father, Everette’; brother, Bobby; and sister, Shirley Flippo.

Surviving relatives include his wife of 26 years, Jeannie Taylor Drennon; daughter, Darlene Drennon; son, Lon Drennon and wife, Cheryl; stepdaughters, Teresa Crawford and Sonya MacMillan; brothers, Donnie and Bill Drennon; sister, Judy Hackney; two granddaughters; three grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Chaplain Chris Goza officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Tyrone McKibben, 60, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, June 7, 2008, at a local hospital.

Lloyd McMillian Jr.

Lloyd McMillian Jr., 41, a longtime resident of Chattanooga, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, in an out of town hospital.

He attended Tyner School and he attended Miracle Lighthouse Church.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, C.L. and Christine Carney, L.D. McMillian and Faye Erickson.

He is survived by mother, Evelyn McMillian; father, Lloyd Lee McMillian Sr.; sister, Tammy McMillian; two brothers, Ronny and Donny McMillian; several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Ella Miller officiating.

Interment will be in Fort Hill Cemetery in Cleveland, Tenn.

Garland Eugene “Gene” Morgan, 74, a lifelong resident of Soddy-Daisy, stepped over into Heaven and took hold of God’s hand on Thursday, June 5, 2008.

Melanie G. Newman, 46, of East Ridge, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2008, in a local hospital.

Melanie received her R.N. degree from the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing at Samford University and was retired from Erlanger Medical Center.

Eddie Reed

Eddie D. Reed, 58, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away peacefully at home Friday, June 6, 2008.

He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran who served on the USS Truxtun during the Vietnam War. During his working career, he was a fleet supervisor for Stowers, Wright Bros. and Santek. Eddie enjoyed playing golf and fishing, but his greatest enjoyment was his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat Reed; parents, Guy and Effie Ree; and a sister, Carolyn Walker.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeri Reed; children, Carla (Jerrod) Blaiser, Michael Cranfill, Laura (Donnie) Henegar; grandchildren, Brittny, Hunter, Jacob, Jake, Trever, Andrew, Julie and Jenny; brothers, J.E. Reed, Chester Reed, Billy Joe Reed; sisters, Betty Sue Reed, Anna Mae Coleman, Margaret Harvey; and several nieces and nephews.

James Rust III

James U. “Pops” Rust III, 75, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 4, 2008.

Jim was born in Nashville on Feb. 20, 1933.

Jim was a dedicated father and served our country faithfully in the Marine Corps Reserves and as a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Jim retired after 30 years of service with the Veterans Administration Medical Center as the chief radiology technologist. He was truly a servant and always went the extra mile to assist injured veterans who served our country.

Jim was a member of Bennett Road Bible Baptist Church in East Ridge. He never met a stranger and readily gave hugs to every one he met. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was quick to laugh or tell jokes. He was a proud father and grandfather and always shared their photographs and accomplishments. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, and forever remembered as “Pops.”

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 54 years, Arlene Rust; and their four children, son, James “Rusty” Rust, of Nashville; daughter, Lisa Newman and husband, Doug Newman, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; daughter, Kathryn Rust Fitzke and husband, Gary Fitzke, of Louisburg, Kan.; son, Robert Rust, of Nashville; three grandchildren, Lucas “Luke” Rust, Reed Rust, Alicia Newman; stepfather, Joseph C. Houston, of Maryville, Tenn.; sister, Linda Hale, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

The service to celebrate Jim’s life will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 S. Moore Road, in East Ridge.

A graveside service will follow with full military honors in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 9, 2008.

Susan Smith

Susan Latimore Phillips Smith died on Monday, June 2, 2008, at the age of 90.

She had led an extraordinary life full of travel and curiosity. From her beginnings as the daughter of Isaac Gray and Helen Kline Phillips, through her master’s degree in philosophy, on into raising four children, teaching at UC/UTC, working with Hunter Art Museum, volunteering on and off stage at Chattanooga Little Theatre and at Red Cross and later at Chattanooga Cares, this Phi Beta Kappa member never just let life go by and collected many friends as she spread her love of knowledge and people around. Among the groups she participated in, the favorites were Lookout Mountain Book Club and the Friday Morning Study Club. She will be sorely missed by many.

Her parents; her husband, Dr. Moore J. Smith Jr.; her brother, Gray Phillips; and her son, Gray Dean Latimore Smith, precede her in passing.

She is survived by her son, Moore J. (Kay) Smith III, of Lookout Mountain; her daughters, Helen Everett Smith Pieve, Chattanooga, Susan Phillips Smith (Mike) Bass, of Bartlesville, Okla.; and grandchildren, Ernest (Glenda) Pieve III, Rosa Susan Pieve (Danny) Shannon, Sophia Smith (Jerry Lee) Gross, Edward Isaac Bass; and great-grandchildren, Isaac Foster Shannon, Katherine Pieve, Daniel Gray Pieve and Sidda Lee Gross.

TENNESSEE

Dr. Earl Campbell Jr.

BELLBUCKLE — Dr. Earl Campbell Jr., son of Dr. and Mrs. Earl Roy Campbell Sr., died at his home Wednesday, May 28, 2008.

He was born Feb. 2, 1929. He was a graduate of Washington & Lee University and the Medical College of Tulane University.

He was a member of the America Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and completed his post-graduate studies at the Baroness Erlanger Hospital and Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He was a partner in the Campbell Clinic of Chattanooga and following its sale he practiced in Fort Oglethorpe, Cheyenne, Wyo., Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and Hopkinsville, Ky. He gave up much of his life to ease the suffering of others.

He also served as governor of the Tennessee Descendants of the Mayflower Society in the 1990s.

He is survived and dearly missed by his wife, Margaret; and his son, Earl Roy Campbell III; as well as the daughters of Donna Campbell, his former wife, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Smith, Mrs. Aimee Lurey, Ms. Nancy Campbell.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Ala., or a charity of your choice.

There will be a private ceremony honoring his memory.

Bill Clemons

McDONALD — Willard J. Clemons, 72, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2008, at his residence.

He was a member of Collegedale Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

He retired after 38 years of faithful service as a minister of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He served in numerous conferences within the church. He began in the Indiana Conference and later served in the Middle East Division as president of the Jordan Mission. He went on to serve in the South Dakota Conference; Upper Columbia Conference; Ontario Conference; Gulf States in Montgomery, Ala.; and finished out his ministry in Georgia’s Cumberland Conference of SDA.

He was the son of the late Harold Clemons and Florence Levitt and was preceded in death by his son, Robert Dale Clemons; and sister, Patricia Stephan.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Jean Clemons; daughter, Connie René and husband, Laird Solomon, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; two sons, Mark Allen Clemons, Chattanooga, Gary Eugene Clemons, Cleveland, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, Luke and Caleb Solomon.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Apison Seventh-Day Adventist Church with Pastor Greg Daniel officiating.

Interment will be in Collegedale Memorial Park.

WHITWELL — Jimmy Lewis “Rim” Frizzell, 67, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008, surrounded by family.

He was a retired coal miner and of Church of God faith.

Mr. Frizzell was preceded in death by children, Robert Frizzell, Belinda Frizzell; parents, the Rev. Walter and Ethel Frizzell; brothers, Jackie Frizzell, William Frizzell, Phillip Frizzell; sister, Barbara Summers.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Frizzell, of Whitwell; children, Diana (James) Skyles, of South Pittsburg, Tenn., Ethel Mae (Bob) Frizzell, of Signal Mountain, Eric (Misty) Frizzell, of Chattanooga, Walter (Sherrie) Frizzell, Samantha (Jason Shaw) Frizzell, Natalie Nicole Frizzell, of Cartwright; sister, Jan Mount, of Jasper, Tenn.; brother, Tommy Frizzell, of Cartwright; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

LENOIR CITY — Beulah Akins Harris, 90, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008, at her home.

She was a member of First Baptist Church. Beulah was retired from Yale and Town and was an avid quilter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Harris; son, Jerry Harris; parents, Walter and Bertha Shaw Akins; four sisters and three brothers.

Survived by her children, Betty Galyon and husband, George, Bill Harris and wife, Carole, all of Lenoir City, Brenda Allender and husband, George, of Jasper, Tenn., Randy Harris and wife, Diane, of Lenoir City; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Ronald Broom

ROSSVILLE — Ronald Broom, a.k.a. “McGuiver” or “Red,” 63, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008.

He had lived in the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas for most of his life and was of the Baptist faith. He was an Army veteran and retired from U.S. Pipe in 2003 as a coremaker after more than 33 years of service. He also loved working on Ford Trucks and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Hattie Broom; his wife, Elsie McClure Broom; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Rhonda Paradise, of Rossville, and Sharon and Eddie May, of Flintstone, Ga.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Randy Broom Sr. and Keith and Amanda Broom, all of Rossville; brother, Lonnie White, of Nashville; sisters, Reba Sprague, of Chattanooga, and Delores “Tootsie” Brown, of St. Louis, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Heather, Hollie, John and Dillon Henley and Randy Broom Jr., Rachel, Kayla and Christopher Broom; and several nieces and nephews.

CHICKAMAUGA — Geraldine Brannon Davis, 73, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008, at a local hospital.

A resident of the Chickamauga area for the past 55 years, she was formerly of LaFayette, Ga. She was a former employee of Jones-Blair Paint, where she worked for over 20 years, and was of the Church of Christ faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis “Bear Cat” Davis; parents, Thomas and Clarice Craton Brannon; and brother, Johnny T. Brannon.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Robin (Danny) Davis, of Ringgold, Ga., Jackie Davis (Lenny Seasonwein), of Whitestone, N.Y., and Gerry (Rusty) Shelton, of Ringgold; brother, Robert “Bob” (Mary Ann) Brannon, of Stockbridge, Ga.; sister-in-law, Faye (Franklin) Turner, of Chattanooga; four grandchildren, the Rev. RINGGOLD — Steve Benjamin Knight, 89, died Friday, June 6, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Ringgold, and was retired from U.S. Pipe and was a World War II Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertys Ross Knight; and a son, Tommy Benjamin Knight.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Baxter and Sharron Knight, of Ringgold; and a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Ed Lindner, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a sister, Irene Alexander, of Molten, Ala.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

ROSSVILLE — Danny York Teague, 59, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2008.

He had lived in the Chattanooga and North Georgia area for most of his life and was a member of Cloud Springs Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Army Reserve and had worked as a dispatcher for Brown Transportation and many others. He enjoyed reading, politics and UT football.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Roy and Roxie Barnes and Andrew and May Teague.

Survivors include his parents, Alvin and Peggy Teague, of Rossville; son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Rachel Teague, of Branford, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Michelle and Henry Stefan Colman, of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Maurice Teague, of Chattanooga, and Michael Teague, of Chickamauga, Ga.; grandson, Jackson Reed Colman; and one nephew and spouse, Kevin and Laura Teague.

She had lived the last 30 years in the North Georgia area and was a devoted member of Catoosa Baptist Tabernacle. She also enjoyed sewing and was a NASCAR fan, but most of all she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Nancy Whitehead.

Survivors include her loving husband of 58 years, Herbert Williams, of Ringgold; sons and daughter-in-law, David Curtis Williams, of Ringgold, Bob and Kathy Williams, of Dalton, Ga., and Michael Alan Williams, of Ringgold; daughter, Sharon Kay Hicks, of Ringgold; two brothers, Ray Whitehead, of Maryville, Tenn., and Earl Whitehead, of Greenback, Tenn.; two sisters, Virginia Harrison, of Etowah, Tenn., and Charlotte Gates, of Colorado; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer Clark, Scott Dykes, Sarah Beyermier, Amy and Jennifer Williams, Jade Rice, Shane Williams, Mindy Smith, Jeremy Karr and Brandy and Candy Williams; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 9, 2008, in the Wallis-Stewart Chapel with the Rev. Harold Howell officiating.

Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

The family will begin receiving friends after 5 p.m. today and prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.

GERALDINE — Ollie Mae Bailey, 104, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008, in Crowne Health Care.

Funeral service is at 2 p.m. CDT today, June 8, from New Home Methodist Church.

Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

Margaret Williams

CEDAR BLUFF — Margaret Williams, 74, died Friday, June 6, 2008.

Survivors include her husband, Gordon Williams; sons, Terry Williams, Gordon David Williams and James Randall Williams; mother, Evelyn Lemming; sister, Mellie Hardin; brother, James Lemming; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. EDT Monday, June 9, from Pentecostal Worship Center.

Visitation is today, June 8, 2008, at Mason Funeral Home, Summerville, Ga.
