Former UNC Greensboro point guard Amanda Eaton has joined the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball staff, coach Wes Moore announced Tuesday.
Eaton fills the spot vacated by Ashley McElhiney, who was with the Lady Mocs for one season and is expecting her first child later this month.
A 2001-05 starter with the Spartans, Eaton spent last season as an assistant coach at Mars Hill College. She previously was a UNCG assistant and began her coaching career at Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro.
“The last couple of years I’ve had the opportunity to see her on the road recruiting and had been impressed with her personality and her enthusiasm,” Moore said at McKenzie Arena, where he is conducting a basketball camp this week.
“I felt like that would, obviously, be an asset not only on the court with our guards, but also in the recruiting process.”
Among Eaton’s responsibilities will be working with the Lady Mocs guards, including several freshmen who will need to contribute right away. Eaton once held the UNCG record for career 3-pointers with 169.
“I definitely preferred somebody with a point guard background,” Moore said. “It’s one thing to be a guard, but it’s another thing to be a point guard. And, again, I always admired her leadership ability and her work ethic and intensity.
“I think it’s going to be important that she’s able to pass that on to these freshmen as they come in.”
