Tennessee: D-I private school multiplier retained
FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Although reclassification was the major issue voted on by the TSSAA Board of Control here Wednesday, it was not the only one which will have a lasting affect.
During the nine-plus hour meeting the Board also voted, by a 6-3 margin, to keep the current 1.8 multiplier for private schools that compete in Division I. That means when the new classification plan begins in 2009, Boyd-Buchanan, Chattanooga Christian and Notre Dame will have their enrollments multiplied and remain in districts with larger schools.
Prior to the vote to keep the multiplier, TSSAA Executive Director Ronnie Carter recommended that the Board vote to eliminate it.
“We don’t find that the multiplier has accomplished anything,” Carter said. “We have about the same number of private schools winning championships as before it was implemented.”
A motion to eliminate the multiplier was voted down, 5-3 and moments later, a new motion to keep it as is was passed.
“I don’t have anything against Boyd-Buchanan, CCS or Notre Dame,” said Board member and Sequatchie County principal Tommy Layne, who voted to keep the multiplier. “But every kid at our school lives in Sequatchie County. We play with who comes through the door.
“I’m not saying those schools recruit, but they can bring in athletes from places we can’t. Because of that, I think they need to play up.”
