Alex Anderson spent most of this week on the basketball court, coaching rather than playing.
The former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga star forward, who in April became the first player in school and Southern Conference history to be selected in the WNBA draft, was one of several current and former Lady Mocs helping out during coach Wes Moore’s basketball camp.
Anderson, twice named the SoCon player of the year, has said she’d like to coach one day. But not any time soon, she hopes, because even though she’s not playing anywhere right now, that could change in the fall when leagues in numerous countries overseas begin their seasons.
Among the countries she thinks could be possible destinations are Spain, Hungary, Poland and Turkey.
“I really want to go to Spain,” Anderson said. “It’s more Americanized there and probably easier to live compared to some of the other countries where the culture and the language are so different.
“Hopefully I’ll get to pick, but if not, then I’ll just take whatever I can get.”
Drafted 39th overall by the San Antonio Silver Stars, Anderson was cut at the end of training camp. She said the overall experience was very positive for her and she continues to cheer for the Silver Stars, who were 4-4 heading into Friday’s game against Seattle.
“They were all really nice people and they’ve got a great team,” she said.
Anderson was cut three days past the deadline for her to register for the last class she needs to graduate with a degree in psychology; the class was offered during UTC’s first summer session. She said she has worked it out with her professor so she can take the class online in the fall. In the meantime she will work and work out this summer, either here or back home in Stone Mountain, Ga.
The quick, 6-foot-1 Anderson said her top priority this summer is to continue improving her ball-handling skills as she continues to make the adjustment from playing the post to the wing.
“That’s all I’m doing,” she said, “just shooting and ball-handling. It’s nice to have a little time off, but I know I’ve got to keep working and keep trying to get better.”
