Update: Burned popcorn leads to courthouse evacuation, delay of vehicular homicide trial
The Hamilton County Courthouse was evacuated this morning after someone called 911 after burning popcorn in a microwave in the basement kitchen area of the courthouse, officials said.
Capt. Carlos Hampton with the Chattanooga Fire Department said courthouse employees and jurors were allowed back into the building 20 minutes after the evacuation.
All the offices and courtrooms emptied after the alarm sounded a few minutes past 10 a.m., a Times Free Press reporter attending a court case said.
Because of the evacuation, a trial set to begin today on a vehicular homicide case has now been moved to July, officials said.
The evacuations interrupted jury selection for the vehicular homicide trial for Steven Tyler Frizzell. A Memorial Day 2007 accident killed 72-year-old Robert Frizzell Sr., and injured his wife, JoAnn Frizzell, and family friend Ruby Arnold. The defendant and the victims are not related.
