Update: More crime breaks out after early morning stabbing death in Chattanooga

A 22-yr-old man has died as a result of a stabbing that occurred this morning at 2241 East 27th St.

Police were called at 2:19 a.m. after two men became involved in a fight, according to police spokesperson Sgt. Jerri Weary.

The victim has been identified as 22-year-old LaTony Johnson. Police have identified 28-year-old Courrie Long as the suspect and are searching for him.

A series of incidents possibly related to Johnson’s death have broken out over the last few hours, according to Sgt. Weary. She said police received a report of a house that was shot into on East 27th Street at 5:30 this morning; a home that was firebombed at 1602 E.17th St. at 6:15 am; and a car that was shot into on E. 34th St.

Police are investigating the possibility of gang affiliation as being the motive for these incidents, however, nothing has been confirmed, Sgt. Weary said.

According to police reports, the two men argued for reasons still not yet known. Police say Mr. Long pulled a knife and stabbed Mr. Johnson once in the chest.

The victim collapsed near 2241 East 27th St. where neighbors called police and EMS. The man was rushed to Erlanger hospital and immediately taken into surgery, where he later died.
