Chattanooga: Champions to host youth tennis tourney
More than 100 12-and-under junior tennis players will be competing at the Champions Club this weekend in the USTA National Open 12s boys and girls championships, which starts Saturday and run through next Wednesday.
Among the participants in the level 2 event — which puts it one notch below the elite national tournaments — are some of the nation’s top players, such as boys No. 1 seed David Crisovan of Hallandale Beach, Fla., who is ranked No. 13 in the country, and girls top seed Andie Daniell, from Douglasville, Ga., who is ranked No. 18.
Earlier this week, Crisovan, playing up an age group in the 14s, reached the round of 16 at the Southern Open in Pelham, Ala. Daniell’s most recent tournament was the Southern Closed earlier this month in Columbia, S.C., where she lost in the semifinals. Jessie Lynn Paul, who won the event and moved up to No. 16 in the country in the latest ranking, is the No. 2 seed in the girls’ draw.
The No. 3 seed in the boys’ draw is Sunay Bhat of Knoxville, who is ranked No. 19 in the country.
In the combined field of 110 players, as of Thursday, nine are from in and around Chattanooga. Leading the way are Jack Gray of Ooltewah, who is ranked No. 2 in the state in the boys 12s, and Turner Voges, who is ranked sixth.
