Chattanooga: CCS guys, Lady Irish win titles

Chattanooga Christian’s Will Reynolds and Notre Dame’s Kris Cambron won singles titles Tuesday in the District 6-A/AA individual tennis tournament at the Champions Club.

CCS’s Jonny Herberich and Andy Driggans combined for the boys’ doubles championship, while Notre Dame’s Jennifer Brouner and Jennifer Taylor won in girls’ doubles.

All district finalists advance to Monday’s Region 3-A/AA tournament at Chattanooga Christian.

Reynolds won his first district title with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lookout Valley’s Tanner Stancil. Cambron earned her first singles crown, beating teammate Caitlin Robbins, 6-1, 6-2.

“It’s awesome to win this,” said Cambron, a junior. “It was weird playing Caitlin. We’ve played in practice before, and it’s hard to be as competitive when you’re playing a teammate rather than someone else.”

Brouner and Taylor defeated CCS’s Holly Scholl and Ashlyn Bolton, 6-3, 6-2, for the girls’ doubles championship. Herberich and Driggans secured their title by beating Notre Dame’s Chip Jabaley and Charlie Ponitz.

The CCS girls’ and boys’ squads won the district team crowns in the regular season and will play for the Region 3 championship this week against the Collegedale Academy boys and Arts & Sciences girls from District 5.

n District 6-AAA: Also at the Champions Club, Ooltewah’s Caroline Denton and Jeff Conner won singles championships. In doubles, the Owls’ Caleb Friddell and Steffen Chroscz won the boys’ competition, while Soddy-Daisy’s Andrea and Christy Johnson won the girls’ event.

The 6-AAA finalists advance to the Region 3 tournament Monday at Champions Club against the District 5-AAA finalists.

Denton beat Red Bank’s Amy Metcalf, 6-3, 6-1, for her third district title. Conner, a senior, rebounded from a first-set loss to down Red Bank’s Jarvis Appleberry, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

“That was my toughest match all year,” Conner said. “I had to change my game; I couldn’t play like I normally do. I had to be more patient and let him leave the ball in the middle.”

Friddell and Chroscz defeated Soddy-Daisy’s Bret Wade and Austin Smith, 6-3, 6-3. The Johnson sisters beat Ooltewah’s Jessica Crum and Allison Varnell, 6-3, 6-4.
