Chattanooga: Chargers again win Region 3

The Chattanooga Christian School boys’ tennis team won its sixth straight Region 3-A/AA team championship Friday.

The Chargers defeated Collegedale Academy 4-0 at CCS. They clinched the match with four singles wins, advancing to the state sectional round next week with a 13-2 record. The Eagles, the District 5-A/AA champs, ended their season at 13-3.

“They were all competitive matches, and at the start we couldn’t tell which way it would go,” said CCS boys’ assistant coach Tim Scholl. “Our boys were able to keep the ball in play a little better today.”

The Chargers’ Will Reynolds, Andy Driggans, Tyler Roden and Jonny Herberich recorded the wins. Herberich sealed the team triumph by beating the Eagles’ Mills McArthur 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2.

“I won all but one deuce point, so it was a lot of luck involved,” Herberich said. “We lost a lot of players from last year, but it’s been a lot of fun and we want to keep going.”

Only he and Driggans returned this year from the 2007 Class A/AA state-runner-up team. Reynolds returned to CCS and the No. 1 spot after a year at Chattanooga State Middle College.

“They pulled the team together themselves and pushed each other,” Scholl said.

Collegedale’s Jordan Evans remained injured from last week’s District 5-A/AA individual tournament and could not compete at his usual No. 2 spot in the lineup.

“We had a great season, but we just came up against a powerhouse here,” Eagles coach Matt Nafie said. “Hats off to them; they’re a great program and they’ve raised the bar. We got to keep raising it ourselves and try to catch them.”

n Region 3-AAA: McMinn County won its second region team championship in a row Friday at Ooltewah.

The Cherokees (14-0) beat the Owls 4-1 in singles to earn a Class AAA sectional berth. No. 3 player George Pannell clinched the victory with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 win over Ooltewah’s Caleb Friddell.

Last year, McMinn County lost to Murfreesboro school Siegel in the sectional round.

“Their ultimate goal is the state tournament as a team, and as far as I know that would be a first for the high school,” McMinn coach Susan Ray said. “We were close last year. We had a little taste of it, but we haven’t been able to walk through the door.”

“Today was not won by talent, but sheer determination to pull out a victory.”
