Although area high school tennis teams already have determined region winners, individual players still have a shot this week at going to Spring Fling.
The Region 3-A/AA and 3-AAA individual tournaments will be held Monday at the Champions Club, with district winners and runners-up playing off for berths to the TSSAA state individual tournament. The 3-AAA semifinals will start at 1 p.m.; the 3-A/AA event begins at 4.
District 5 and 6 winners and runners-up in singles and doubles advanced to the region tournament. Region 3 champions earn a trip to Spring Fling next week in Murfreesboro.
Last week, Walker Valley won the girls’ 3-AAA team crown and McMinn County won the boys’ title. In Class A/AA, Chattanooga Christian’s boys and girls continued their region dominance with 2008 championships. The Chargers have been region champs since 2002, while the Lady Chargers have won the region since 1998.
In AAA girls’ singles, District 6 winner Caroline Denton of Ooltewah and Red Bank’s Amy Metcalf, the runner-up, will face District 5 champ Hannah Ervin from Walker Valley and Cleveland’s Kelsey Cantrell.
Denton was a state quarterfinalist in 2005 and a state semifinalist in 2006.
“Last year, I learned that the regular season is for watching other players and improving; district and region is when it counts,” Denton said. “I’m ready to go back to state.”
Ooltewah’s Jeff Conner, the District 6 winner, and runner-up Jarvis Appleberry from Red Bank will go up against Walker Valley’s Nathan Kaiser, the District 5 champ, and his teammate John Gibson.
In Class A/AA, four-time District 5 winner Tarah Garner from Boyd-Buchanan and runner-up Ahmee Kelly from Arts & Sciences advanced. They’ll take on Notre Dame’s Kris Cambron, the winner of District 6, and her teammate Caitlin Robbins. CCS’s Will Reynolds and Lookout Valley’s Tanner Stancil will take on District 5 winner Nathan Schley of Grace Academy and Boyd-Buchanan’s Jacob LeQuire.
Reynolds will play for his first region title. He returned to the Chargers after a year at Chattanooga State Middle College.
“I love being back, I really do,” he said. “This has been the best year. It’s been fun and it’s been a challenge. I really missed the high school tennis scene last year, and I’m glad to be playing and representing CCS.”
