University of Georgia: Ex-prep stars coming home
University of Georgia golfer Harris English takes his share of insults in stride.
After all, he is a freshman — ripe for ribbing — on the No. 1 overall seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
UGA junior Adam Mitchell rarely misses his opportunity for a laugh at English’s expense even though they are teammates and good friends.
Mitchell went to McCallie and English attended Baylor which stirs up a rivalry at the simple mention of either school between the two.
“He’s a good buddy of mine even if he did go to Baylor,” Mitchell said. “We mess with each other about it, and it’s fun.
“At least once a week I make sure he knows who won the football game.”
The two Chattanooga prep stars will return to the Scenic City this week to play for Georgia in the NCAA East Regional at Council Fire Golf Club.
Both have hundreds of hours either playing or practicing at Council Fire which adds to the thought that the Bulldogs are the favorite to win this week.
“I really wanted to go to Chattanooga for the regional if there was a chance,” said English, who spent his youth in Thomasville, Ga. before attending Baylor. “When I found out we are there, I was really excited. I love Chattanooga, and I miss it a lot.”
In addition to their experience at Council Fire — Mitchell practiced a lot there with former UTC golfer Bryce Ledford — Mitchell and English have the Bulldogs in the No. 1 seed because they are among the best collegiate golfers in the country.
Mitchell is ranked No. 10 by Golfweek and has been selected to play on the U.S. Palmer Cup team. English is ranked No. 26 and won the Brickyard Championship and the Isleworth Collegiate this season.
“Pound-for-pound, Adam is one of the longest guys in college golf,” UGA coach Chris Haack said. “Harris is figuring out what college golf is all about, and he’s going to being a potential superstar.”
But English still has to hear about McCallie from his good buddy. Neither their friendship or high school rivalry will die.
“With Harris being a freshman, he’s going to catch grief from everybody,” Mitchell said. “With me, it must have some underlying Baylor-McCallie thing in it.”
