Walker Valley trio earn Fling berths

Walker Valley’s Nathan Kiser, Megan Smith and Amanda Smith faced familiar foes on the way to securing trips to the Spring Fling — their own teammates.

Kiser won the boys’ singles title and the Smith twins won the girls’ doubles championship in the Region 3-AAA individual tennis tournament Monday at Champions Club, receiving berths to the TSSAA Class AAA state tournament next week in Murfreesboro.

Ooltewah’s Caroline Denton earned her third girls’ singles crown. Denton reached the state semifinals in 2006.

McMinn County’s Neal Baldwin and Michael Hewgley won in boys’ doubles. Baldwin went to the Fling in 2007 as a singles player.

The Smiths beat fellow Lady Mustangs Forest Wilson and Amanda Halton, 6-0, 6-2, in the final. The twins will make their third appearance in Murfreesboro, where they previously lost in the first round to the eventual champions last year and to the runners-up in 2006.

“We’re hoping that maybe this year we’ll get past the first round,” Megan Smith said. “It’s hard playing our teammates, because we’re friends and you can’t be friends on the court. You don’t want anyone to be mad at you.”

In the boys’ singles final, Kiser defeated teammate John Gibson, 6-1, 6-0, to earn his first Spring Fling trip.

“I’m super excited about going to state. This just means all the hard work is finally paying off,” said Kiser, a senior like the Smiths. “I hate playing a teammate, though. It makes it that much tougher. We play all the time and we’re such good friends. I would’ve been just as happy if he would’ve won and got to go.”

n Region 3-A/AA: At Chattanooga Christian, the Chargers’ Will Reynolds and Boyd-Buchanan’s Tarah Garner earned Murfreesboro trips as region singles champs.

CCS’s Jonny Herberich and Andy Driggans won in boys’ doubles, and Notre Dame’s Jennifer Taylor and Jennifer Brouner defeated Arts & Sciences’ Kayla and Albany Kelly for the girls’ doubles championship.

“This is the first time we’ve made it past the region,” said Taylor, a junior. “Let’s face it, we played an amazing team to get here. We just stuck to our game plan and never relaxed during any point.”

n Division II-AA East/Middle Region: At Baylor on Sunday, GPS’s Claire Bartlett collected her third consecutive region singles championship. McCallie’s David Henry won the boys’ title, and teammates Wes Nelson and Chris Schlabach won the boys’ doubles crown, while Knoxville Webb’s Guinn and Vicki Garcia were girls’ doubles champs.
