Chattanooga: GPS, Baylor girls, McCallie advance
McCallie, GPS and Baylor’s girls punched their tickets to Spring Fling tennis Tuesday with victories in state quarterfinal matches.
McCallie’s Blue Tornado blanked Baylor 5-0 at McCallie and the Bruisers eliminated Ensworth 5-0 at GPS. The Baylor girls beat St. Mary’s 5-2 in Memphis.
The winners received berths to the TSSAA Division II-AA semifinals Tuesday at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro.
“We’re really excited to go and face some good competition,” GPS’s Anne Elizabeth Holley said. “It’s just exciting to get there and get ready to play everyone.”
The Bruisers (13-0) won the East/Middle region and will return to the state team tournament as two-time defending state champions. Sarah Evans, Cady Jones, Holley, Meredith Morrow and Millie Earhart won in the sweep.
Morrow clinched the match victory for the Bruisers with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Anne Presley at No. 4 singles. In postseason team format, the first team to four wins earns the team victory.
“Our girls played very well today,” GPS coach Sue Bartlett said. “We didn’t get to play Ensworth during the regular season, but we’ve played some of their players in tournaments. They’re a very consistent team and our girls had to play well today to win.”
McCallie (13-0) also won state team titles in 2006 and 2007. Tuesday the Blue Tornado defeated the Red Raiders, fifth-seeded in the region, for the third time this season. The Blue Tornado’s David Henry, Wes Nelson, Chris Schlabach and Thomas Fanjoy recorded wins.
Schlabach clinched the victory at No. 4 singles, beating Aditya Rali 6-0, 6-1.
“It feels good to be going back, and we’re not taking anything for granted,” Schlabach said. “We’ve been practicing hard and we’re going to stay focused. We’re happy with every win we get.”
In Memphis, the Baylor girls (8-5) led St. Mary’s 3-2 after singles and won two doubles matches to get the team win. Currant Scruggs, Katie Thornton and Erika Marschall won for the Lady Red Raiders in singles, while Sylvia Brookoff and Cassidy Gubin recorded the wins for St. Mary’s.
Currant Scruggs combined with Thornton for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while sister Kelly Scruggs and Marschall earned a victory at No. 2 doubles.
“It’s definitely good to go to state two years in a row,” Baylor girls’ tennis coach Jason Ontog said. “The girls have been training very hard for it. We felt we were one of the four best teams out there, so it’s good to get back there.”
