Flavors of America play out in Switzerland
I got an interesting e-mail from the Park Hotel Weggis, a boutique hotel in Switzerland that’s a member of the exclusive Relais and Chateaux group of hotels and resorts. In a time when many American chefs promote the cuisines of foreign countries, this Swiss hotel will be celebrating the flavors of America throughout the rest of the year in its restaurant, The Grape. Here’s a brief look at the states and their cuisines that will be highlighted:
May— the regional Louisiana Creole cuisine featuring dishes such as red jambalaya and chicken gumbo.
June — Michigan’s hearty, Midwestern foods, such as steak and potatoes and chicken wings.
July — New Mexico’s Tex-Mex cuisine, featuring fajitas and dishes with red and green chilies, cilantro and spices such as cumin.
August — New Jersey’s coastal cuisine, such as peppered tuna, and also Italian-American pastas and other dishes.
September Regional South-Central cuisine from Oklahoma featuring items such as barbecue, spare ribs and farmer steak.
So, I ask, have the Swiss never heard of good Southern cuisine such as shrimp and grits or fried green tomatoes, fried chicken and sweet tea? I would hope that if they continue this series, they’ll look South for some of the best of American foods. But, I will praise them for introducing the flavors of the USA to Swiss soil.
