Fort Oglethorpe: City Council approves swimming pool proposal

The Fort Oglethorpe City Council approved a proposal from the North Georgia Family YMCA to partner with the city for aquatic services at the new Fort Oglethorpe swimming pool.

The deal was approved on a 4-1 vote, with dissenter Harold Silcox saying the city built the new pool to accommodate more pool users without overcrowding.

“I’m concerned this may produce overcrowding for our residents when it’s their tax dollars that made it possible,” Councilman Silcox said.

The deal will offer savings on package memberships at both the YMCA and the pool at Gilbert-Stephenson Park.

For example, the fee for a resident family at the pool will be $150, but decrease to $125 if combined with a YMCA membership. The separate YMCA rate is $234, but it is $175 in conjunction with a pool membership.

The pool is scheduled to open this weekend.

Council members also gave approval Monday to spend $95,486 to bore under Cloud Springs Road for the West Chickamauga Creek sewer interceptor.

Mr. Cobb said the depth of the bore will be about 19 feet.

In other action councilmen:

n Designated Mr. Silcox as the city voting delegate and flag bearer for the Parade of Flags at the annual Georgia Municipal Association Convention.

n Approved a maintenance contract for city hall roof air units by Jake Marshall for $14,616.

n Approved an intergovernmental agreement with Catoosa County for a city inspector to serve as sewer inspector for the balance of the West Chickamauga sewer interceptor construction.

n Authorized the police department to purchase a new 2008 Chevrolet Impala for $16,600 for use as a detective car.
