Chattanooga: D-II East track delayed till today

The second half of the Division II East region track meet, postponed by Thursday’s steady rain, will conclude today at GPS, beginning at 5 p.m. The field events and 3200-meter run were held Tuesday, with McCallie leading the boys’ competition and GPS taking control in the girls’ meet.

D.J. Cochran led McCallie’s Blue Tornado, qualifying for next week’s state meet in the long jump and triple jump. Today he will attempt to qualify in the 400-meter run and the 4x100 relay.

The tightest race of the day could be the boys’ 800, where Baylor’s Bill Matthews’ best time is less than a second faster than McCallie’s Riley Young. Matthews and Young also are two of the area’s top 1600 runners, which makes for another possibly close finish. However, Red Raiders senior Wesley Idlette is expected to dominate the 110 and 300 hurdles.

GPS’s Jasmine Brown, who already qualified in the triple jump, will attempt to add the 100 and 300 hurdles to her Spring Fling resume. Although GPS is the defending state champion, Baylor has had faster times in many of the running events during regular-season meets. The Lady Raiders’ Kiera Payne and Shirley Barrett have two of the top times in the 100.
