Jessica Backer

Jessica Lillian Backer, infant daughter of Robert and Jennifer Backer, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2008, at a local hospital.

Survivors include her parents; her brother, Jake; grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and all who loved her.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at Mount Olivet Cemetery with Father Mike Nolan officiating.

George Bodine Jr.

George Charles Bodine Jr., 89, of East Brainerd, died Friday, May 16, 2008, in a local hospital.

A resident of Chattanooga since 1965, Mr. Bodine was a graduate of Colorado School of Mines. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the first Special Services force.

He retired from Combustion Engineering as a consulting engineer after 20 years of service. Mr. Bodine was active in the Chattanooga Art Community, a member of the Association of Visual Arts and the Watercolor Society. He also volunteered at Memorial Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorlis J. Bodine; daughter, Doree Graham; and brother, Robert Bodine.

Survivors are his wife, Mary Ann Bodine; daughter, Lynn Graham; son, Michael Bodine; granddaughter, Donia Graham; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Danielle Graham, all of Chattanooga; stepchildren, Diana Johnston, Ringgold, Ga., John D. Hauck, Ennis, Montana and Karen Boles, of Sale Creek.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at Pilgrim Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 400 Glenwood Ave., with the Rev. Dr. David Brown officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church from 2-3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Roland Bradley

Roland Bradley, 64, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was preceded in death by parents, Edward Bradley and Sallie Mae Dillard-Bradley.

He leaves to cherish his memory, sisters, Irene King, Eddie Mae (Charlie) Jones and Juanita Bradley, all of Chattanooga; brother, Walter Bradley, Chattanooga; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 19, at Highland Cemetery.

The body will lie in state today after noon.

Ruby Davis

Ruby Viola Lovingood Davis, 94, of Harrison, formerly of Murphy, N.C., died Friday, May 16, 2008, at her residence.

She was a native of Cherokee County, N.C., and had lived in Akron, Ohio, for 40 years before retiring in 1987 to Harrison. She was a founding member of the Hanging Dog Baptist Church. A very Christian loving mother, she devoted her life to caring for her family and read her Bible every day.

She was the daughter of the late Benjamin Posey and Sue Barrett Lovingood. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Conley Lovingood, Charles Lovingood and Ned Lovingood; and one sister, Lola Millsaps.

She is survived by her husband, James Robert Davis; three daughters, Maxine Honeycutt, of Cleveland, Tenn., Morene Cangemi, of Harrison, and Beth McNulty, of Harrison; one brother, Paul Lovingood, of Marble, N.C.; two sisters, Hazel Brooks, of Albany, Ga., and Mildred Palmer, of Murphy; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2008, at the Hanging Dog Baptist Church in Murphy with the Rev. Rondle Ford officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Steve Honeycutt, James McNulty, Dave Furtwengler, Ronnie Rowe, Vito Cangemi and Bob McNulty.

Honorary pallbearer will be Michael Cangemi.

Brooke Eaves

Brooke McKenzie Eaves, infant daughter of Jeff and Leatha Eaves, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday morning, May 17, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Benny and Evelyn Eaves.

She is survived by parents, Jeff and Leatha Eaves; two brothers, Eli and Easton Eaves; sister, Bailey Eaves; maternal grandmother, Linda Wooden; maternal grandfather, Joe Mckinney; several aunts and uncles.

A celebration of her life service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at Silverdale Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Walliser officiating.

Interment will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

James Feagin

James D. Feagin, 82, of Cleveland, Tenn., died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, in an area hospital.

Mr. Feagin worked in the transportation field for 40 years, having retired from W.R. Grace Chemical Co. He was of the Seventh-day Adventist faith and a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II.

He was preceded in death by a brother and five sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Peggy Feagin; two daughters, Linda (Bari) Cruze, Ooltewah, Cheryl (Tim) Clark, McDonald; four grandchildren, Cindee (Kevin) Riggs, Ooltewah; Eric (Autumn) Brown, Apison, Tim (Sheena) Clark, Apopka, Fla., Michelle Clark, McDonald, Tenn.; five great-grandchildren, Katie and Carly Riggs, Ooltewah, Jordan and Austin Brown, Apison, Ethan Clark, Apopka, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

Clyde Frazier

Clyde Maurice Frazier, 76, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at Memorial Hospital following a sudden heart attack.

He was a native of Rutherford County, Tenn., but had lived in the Chattanooga area for many years.

Mr. Frazier had faithfully served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was recently recognized by the Hamilton County Commission for his honorable service both to his country and his community. He was retired from DuPont after 32 years of service. Mr. Frazier was a life member of the DAV and American Legion Post 4848. He was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his father Joseph Floyd Frazier; mother, Zelma DeFriese; and stepfather, Pascal Smith.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Joyce Frazier; daughter, Bernita Renee’ Frazier, of Chattanooga; brother, Bob (Norma) Frazier, of Ooltewah.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the North Chapel with Dr. Lawrence L. Schenk officiating.

Burial with full military honors will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 2-7 p.m. and Monday from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Helen Gregory

Helen Maxine Gregory, 77, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip S. Hardin and Francis Hardin Cox; and husband, Bill E. Gregory.

She is survived by her children, Sherida Kelly and husband, Chip, Mike Gregory and wife, Terry, Keith Gregory and wife, Diane; grandchildren, Hal Wilson and wife, Denise, Elizabeth Funnell and husband, Richard, Krista Gregory, Steven Clift and wife, Kitty, Lindsay Gregory, Chad Gregory, Todd Gregory, Kaitlin Gregory; great-grandchildren, Jack, Kara and Garrett Wilson and Landon Clift.

Mrs. Gregory will be cremated and placed in a crypt next to her husband in Fort Mitchell, Ky.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Christine Helton

Mary Christine Helton, 72, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was a member of the American Legion Post 159 William Blair Post and Senior Neighbors at Alexian Brothers. Mrs. Helton was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Clyde Brackett and Bessie Richards Brackett; brothers, John L., Floyd and Richard Brackett; and sisters, Ida Mae Dial and Shirley Gravely.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Gary E. Helton; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Vickie Cruse, of Chatsworth, Ga.; brothers and sisters-in-law, J.D. and Faye Brackett, of Hixson, Kenneth Brackett, Jerald and Suzy Brackett and Donald Brackett, all of Dalton, Ga., Larry and Myron Helton, Chattanooga, and J.C. and JoAnn Pilant, Knoxville; sisters, Wanda Farner, of Shannon, Ga., and Sue Brackett, of Etowah, Tenn.; special nephew, Dwayne “Poo” Helton, Chattanooga; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and numerous friends.

James Hodges

James “Jake” Hodges, 87, went home peacefully to be with the Lord Friday, May 16, 2008.

He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga.

Jake retired from U.S. Pipe in 1985 after 45 years of service. A resident of the Lookout Valley community, he always helped others, especially those in need. He joined the Lookout Valley Lions Club in 1951, where over many years of service he served as president for seven terms, district governor for one term, was named Lion of the Year and Lion of the Decade and after many years of dedicated service was awarded lifelong membership. During this time he also served on the board of directors for the Lions Eye Bank.

He was instrumental in building a new house of worship for Mountain View Presbyterian Church. This was a project very dear to his heart. He served on the board of deacons as well.

Jake will be greatly missed by his surviving family members, who include his cherished wife of 68 years, Mary Hodges; their only son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Shirley Hodges; three grandchildren, Thomas Hodges, Melanie Carter and Michelle Sewell; four stepgrandchildren, John Brophy, Mike Brophy, David Brophy and Shelley Gunter; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter; one sister, Helen Batey; and one brother-in-law and wife, Angelo and Jean Fella. Also, numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express its sincere gratitude to all of the wonderful caretakers at St. Barnabas Assisted Living and St. Barnabas Nursing Home.

James T. Layne, 76, of Chattanooga, died on Thursday, May 15, 2008.

He was in the Army during the Korean War and was a member of VFW Post 4848. He retired from Singer Cobble. Mr. Layne was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Houston and Flonnie Layne.

Josephine Moore

Josephine Mary Moore, 72, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, May 16, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was born June 17, 1937, in Liverpool, England, to the late William and Agnes Chesters.

Her husband, Edwin Moore, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Moore was formerly employed with Pickett’s, Proffitt’s and Belk as a sales associate. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

David Phillips. 37, of King City, Calif., died Friday, May 2, 2008.

Clarence Schroyer

Clarence Edward Schroyer, 74, a native of Chattanooga and a longtime resident of Prattville, Ala., died peacefully on Thursday, May 15, 2008, in a health care facility in Troy, Ala.

Mr. Schroyer was a 30-year veteran of law enforcement throughout the Chattanooga community and surrounding areas.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris Schroyer.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lee (Vickie) Schroyer, Chattanooga, Randy and Sandi Schroyer, Prattville; seven grandchildren, Jonathan and Jennifer Schroyer, Prattville, David and Lesley Schroyer, Chattanooga, Megan, Caleb and Trevor Jayroe, Prattville; and one brother, Ron Schroyer, Chattanooga.

Henry Sparks, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2008, in a local health care facility.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was retired from Cumberland Case.

Marion Tracy Sturch, 50, of Chattanooga, died on Saturday, May 17, 2008.

He was the son of the late Marion and Pattye Sturch. He was preceded in death by a brother, Hank Sturch.

Survivors include his wife, Greta Sturch; brothers, Tim and Randy Sturch; sister, Cindy Britton; aunt, Margaret Ross; nine nieces and nephews; eight great-nieces and great-nephews.

John Williams Jr.

John Melvin Williams Jr., 57, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of Phillips Temple CME Church and was formerly employed by Eureka Foundry.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Johnetta Williams; brothers, Clyde Carter, Perry Williams and John O. Williams; sisters, Renae Carter, Brenda Carter and Maryetta Sims.

TRACY CITY — Abbye Samuel Bryant Nunley, 91, passed away in a Chattanooga nursing facility Saturday, May 17, 2008.

Mrs. Nunley was preceded in death by her husband, Beecher Nunley; a granddaughter, Rhonda Nunley; brothers, Ben, Jim and Doc Bryant.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald (Mary Lynn) Nunley, Tracy City, Larry (Renee) Nunley, Chattanooga; daughters, Joyce Rawlings, Chattanooga, Joan (Ward) Crutchfield, Chattanooga, Ceccilla Parsons, Roanoke, Va.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

ROSSVILLE — Jack Edward King, 63, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008.

He was born in Chattanooga to the late William Edward King and Lizzie Mae Sprouse King. He was a former mechanic and enjoyed working on cars, especially building engines for “Race Cars.” He was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Chattanooga. He had resided most of his life in the Chattanooga-Northwest Georgia areas.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Nixon; and brothers, Johnny and Robert King.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lynda Jane White King, of Rossville; daughter and son-in-law, Jacquelyn and Dennis Bell, of Chattanooga; sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Andrea King, of Chattanooga, Monte and Sheree King, of Lakeland, Fla.; sisters and brother-in-law, Ruby Shoemake, of Warren, Mich., Rose and David Schmid, of Jackson, Tenn.; grandchildren, Dennis Bell II, of Chattanooga, Decima and Joshua Washington, of Huntsville, Ala.; great-grandsons, Jaron Bell and Dennis Bell III; several nieces and nephews.

John McMahan Jr.

TRENTON — John Michael McMahan Jr., 27, passed away Friday, May 16, 2008, surrounded by his family and friends.

Michael courageously fought a three and a half year battle with cancer and inspired us all to match his love of life, family and friends.

Michael was a graduate of Dade County High School and attended Chattanooga State.

He was formerly employed by National Boiler Service and was self-employed in construction. Michael was an avid outdoorsman, He loved nature and was a concerned environmentalist. He enjoyed music and playing his guitar.

Michael was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and currently attended Piney Grove Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, James M. Case.

He is survived by his parents, Mike and P.R. Case McMahan, of Trenton; one sister, Sheree McMahan, of Knoxville; his faithful dog, Casey; grandparents, George and Thelma Trask, of Trenton, Myrna McMahan, of Trenton, Sonny and Virginia McMahan, of Chattanooga; spouse, Rhonda McMahan, stepsons, Jordan and Austin Gray; several aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Piney Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. John Smith officiating.

Interment was in Lake Hills Memorial Gardens.

Sonny Morgan

ROSSVILLE — J.W. “Sonny” Morgan, 76, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008.

He was a lifelong resident of Rossville, where he was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and was a previous member of Elizabeth Terrace Baptist Church in Rossville, where he was saved in the 1980s. Mr. Morgan was a U.S. Army veteran and was a certified diesel mechanic who worked for 21 years at Nixon Machinery and 10 years at Covington Transport in Fort Oglethorpe before retiring in 1994. He was a devoted Christian who loved his Lord and Savior, as well as has family.

His parents, George and Myrtle Morgan preceded him in death.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Deborah Sue Morgan, of Ooltewah and Sharon Ann and Larry Jones, of Hixson; sister, Norma Jean Pugh, of Florida; two grandchildren which he loved greatly, Morgan B. Jones, who was named after her grandfather, and Lawrence A. Jones IV, both of Hixson; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to give a special thanks to his previous wife and caretaker, Sandra S. Hilton, of Ooltewah, for her love and attention given to the family during this time and to Hospice of Chattanooga for their genuine care.

Billie Murphy

LAKEVIEW — Billie R. Murphy, 80, passed away Friday, May 16, 2008, at a local hospital.

She was a native of Trenton, Ga., and had lived most of her life in Lakeview where she was a member of the Lakeview First Baptist Church and the Lakeview Lions Club. She had worked in the family business at South Market Auto Parts for most of her life.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Ann Southard; parents, Eugene and Nellie Usry; and three brothers, Bud, Jack and James Usry.

Survivors include three children and their spouses, Brenda and Mike Pepper of St. Thomas, Kenneth and Renee’ Murphy, of Acworth, Ga., and Patricia and Steve Morgan, of Chattanooga; three sisters, Elizabeth Bean, of Trion, Ga., Margaret Smith, of Trenton, and Wynell Saylors, of Chattanooga; two brothers, Bob and Carl Usry, both of Trenton; three grandsons; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the South Crest Chapel with Pastor Norman Markle officiating.

Interment will follow in the Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Wilbert Newbille Sr.

ROSSVILLE — Wilbert Leon “Pop” Newbille Sr., 80, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2008.

He was born in Chattanooga, to the late Ernest Leon Newbille and Nola Mae Long Newbille Jones. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from the city of Chattanooga, where he worked at Lovell Field in the maintenance department. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Rossville. He enjoyed playing and coaching softball teams in Chattanooga for several teams such as Taco Bell, Red Food Stores, D.M. Steward, Tops Men’s Wear and Ridge Furnishing. He also enjoyed bowling at Holiday Bowl for the following teams: ABC, Senior Games, Red Food and the Monday Night’s Men’s League.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter-in-law, Carol Newbille.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jerry Newbille, of Rossville; daughters and sons-in-law, Nola Brown, of Rossville, Wilma and Warren Bivens, of East Ridge, Lois and Vic Dowding, of East Ridge; sons and daughter-in-law, Leon Newbille, of East Ridge, Bill and Jody Newbille, of Rossville; brother and sister-in-law, David and Linda Jones, of Soddy-Daisy; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon Monday, May 19, 2008, in the funeral home chapel with Pastors Paul O’Neal, Derrell O’Neal and Bill Newbille officiating.

Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends all day today and Monday morning prior to the service.

Dewey Rowell Sr.

FORT OGLETHORPE — James Dewey Rowell Sr., 79, beloved husband, father and grandfather, went to sleep on the beautiful morning of Saturday, May 17, 2008, only to be awakened in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Mr. Rowell was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area and a member of East Ridge Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany during the Korean War. Mr. Rowell retired after 30 years at the Rossville post office.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert and Pauline Kelsay Rowell; and sister, Marian Carr.

Survivors are his loving and caring wife of 53 years, Mildred Smith Rowell; son, Jim (Kenda) Rowell, Ooltewah; daughters, Donna Huckabee, Soddy-Daisy, Beth Rowell, Fort Oglethorpe; brother, William G. Rowell, Tiftonia; sisters, Jesslyn McClure, Bobbie Jean King, Marlene “Marty” Pagleno, all of Chattanooga; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Ronnie Mitchell officiating.

Interment in Tennessee Georgia Memorial Park.

GROVE OAK — Thomas Weldon “Dude” Berry, 62, passed away Friday, May 16, 2008, at his residence.

A graveside service was held on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at Piney Grove Cemetery.

There was no visitation.

Arrangements were by W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel.

Georgia Gates

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Georgia Lee Gates passed away Monday, January 21, 2008.

She was born in Kensington, Ga., the daughter of Clara Belle and Floyd Weese. She lived in Great Bend, Kan., the later part of her childhood. She raised her own family in Wichita, Kan., and spent her later years in the Kansas City, Kan., area.

Ms. Gates was the loving mother of Karen Gates, Seattle, Wash., Sara Gates, Lenexa, Kan., and Julie Ellington Johnson, Allen, Texas. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Laurent Linville, Samantha Johnson, Natalie Johnson and Olivia Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at Cedar Grove Methodist Church in Kensington, Ga.

Donations made in her memory are welcome at Hospice House and Palliative Care, 9221 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO, 64114.
