Chattanooga: GPS eliminates Baylor

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Chattanooga rivals GPS and Baylor met once again on the tennis courts at Middle Tennessee State University with the same result.

The Bruisers swept the Lady Red Raiders 4-0 Tuesday afternoon in Division II-AA semifinal match.

GPS (14-0) will play for its third consecutive team state championship today against Hutchison at noon EDT at MTSU. This will be the Bruisers’ fourth straight appearance in the Division II girls’ final.

“It’s hard to keep beating people over and over again, especially a strong team like Baylor,” GPS coach Sue Bartlett said. “Today, the girls jumped right out there and never really let Baylor get in.”

The Bruisers swept their crosstown rival in last year’s state final and beat the Lady Red Raiders twice in the regular season. Baylor ends the season at 8-6 overall.

“We’re proud of the season we had and of getting to state two years in a row,” Baylor coach Jason Ontog said.

The Bruisers played some of Hutchison’s players in the Chadwell invitational in Nashville earlier this season. The Memphis school beat Knoxville Webb 4-3 in the other semifinal.

GPS’s Claire Bartlett defeated Currant Scruggs, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and teammate Sarah Evans blanked Katie Thornton, 6-0, 6-0, for a No. 2 victory. At No. 4, the Bruisers’ Anne Elizabeth Holley beat Kelly Scruggs, 6-1, 6-3.

No. 3 player Cady Jones secured the GPS win with a 7-5, 6-1, triumph over Erica Marschall.

“I felt like I was pretty on today, and I was moving my feet well,” Jones said. “We’ve practiced all year for this, so we’re ready for whatever awaits us.”
