MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Richland’s Dustin Jett pitched a complete game that helped the Raiders beat Lookout Valley 9-4, eliminating the Lookout Valley squad from the Class A state tournament at Middle Tennessee Christian School.
Richland (31-3) advances to play Huntingdon in the lower bracket. Lookout Valley finished the season 35-7 and will say good bye to seven seniors who have helped the Yellow Jackets reach the state tournament three years in a row.
“We didn’t hit as well as we’re capable and we made a lot of mistakes,” Lookout Valley coach David Dinger said. “We’ve had a good season and our seven seniors have had good careers to make it here three times, it’s special. It’s hard to get here and it’s hard once you get here.”
Trailing by two runs in the top of the second inning, Lookout Valley senior Lance Rorex hit a bases-loaded triple, scoring Jon Barry, David Moses and Ian McDade. Rorex scored on a Corey Reagan single.
But the Raiders took back their lead by scoring five runs in the bottom of the second off Lookout Valley pitcher Tyler Crowley, who received the loss. Reagan and freshman Hayden Turner each pitched two innings.
Jett held the Yellow Jackets to four runs and picked up his seventh win of the season.
“Jett is a bulldog on the mound for us,” Richland coach Troy Hughes said. “He didn’t have some of his best pitches tonight, but he’ll still go after you. We’ve hit the ball well all year, and playing back-to-back games all year has made us better hitters.”
Earlier in the day, Lookout Valley beat Harriman 16-10 in their first elimination game. A fifth-inning grand slam from Rorex helped the Yellow Jackets rally from a five-run deficit. Lookout Valley trailed 10-5 going into its half of the fourth but got two runs back on a solo homer from Casey Marr and a sacrifice fly from Rorex, who put the Jackets up 11-10 in the fifth with his shot to left.
Lookout Valley sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning, and brought nine home.
