MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The St. Andrew’s-Sewanee girls’ tennis team accomplished a lot firsts to finish first.

The Lady Mountain Lions won the first Division II-A state team championship — the first in any sport for the school — Wednesday at Middle Tennessee State University.

SAS beat the University School of Nashville 4-1 in the championship match, the Lady Mountain Lions’ first win over USN this season. SAS finished the year at 11-2, its only losses being to USN in the regular season.

“The girls were proud to do this and wanted to win it for SAS,” Lady Mountain Lions coach Kelley Black said. “We’re glad to get our name out there and that we have good athletes who can compete with anyone.”

SAS’s Sadie Shackelford beat Jillian Berkman, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, and older sister Avery defeated Sunny Willoughby, 6-3, 7-6. At the No. 5 position, Marie Bowi defeated Olivia Doochin.

USN’s sole singles victory came from Caroline Auld, who beat Zoe Petropoulos in three sets.

German exchange student Friederike Greiwe clinched the title for the Lady Mountain Lions at No. 3 singles, outlasting Robin Shaffer 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.

“It was hard, but all of my team and my coach cheered me on and supported me and that pushed me up,” Greiwe said. “I also really wanted it. I have to leave after this, so I wanted to leave something at the school.”
