Tennessee: Marion returns to Goodpasture
SMYRNA, Tenn. — Showing no ill effects of its opening-game shellacking, Marion County’s baseball team rebounded for two wins Wednesday in the Class AA state tournament.
Facing elimination, the Warriors began the day with a 6-4 victory over Gibbs then put out last year’s state runner-up University School of Jackson 4-1. Marion will play Goodpasture in a rematch of the opening game today at 5 p.m. EDT and must beat the defending champions twice to advance.
In the win over USJ, Marion got all four runs in the third inning. Trey Hill smacked the first pitch he saw for a two-run home run, and Sam Griswald added a two-run single.
“I saw their pitcher had been grooving first-pitch fastballs right down the middle,” Hill said. “So that’s what I was looking for. It was a great feeling.”
Hershel Bettis scattered five hits and coaxed 11 ground-ball outs with two strikeouts for the win.
Earlier in the day the Warriors had earned their first win in their last four state-tournament games by beating Gibbs.
Zeke Guyear’s two-run single in the bottom of the sixth gave Marion the lead and Justin Bell finished off a complete-game win. When Gibbs took the lead with a four-run fourth inning, it was the first time all season that Bell (10-0) had trailed. He gave up just one hit from that point, allowing the Warriors time to reclaim the lead.
“I really don’t think it was nerves that got us beat in our first game against Goodpasture,” Warriors coach Steven Roberts said. “We fell behind to a really good team and then laid down, but the kids came back today and played two gutty games.”
