Tennessee: Smith twins fall in AAA semifinals

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Walker Valley’s Megan and Amanda Smith had been to the Spring Fling twice before, but each time they lost in the doubles first round of the Class AAA state tennis tournament.

Thursday, the Smith twins ended their high school careers in the doubles semifinals at Old Fort Park. They lost to Siegel’s Hayley Edwards and Briana Wishing, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

“We came in knowing Siegel has a really good volley but if we could make them frustrated, they’ll make mistakes,” Megan Smith said. “But then the nerves set in the first set and we calmed down in the second set. In the third, they were fired up to get it over with. I’m not disappointed with how we played, but that we didn’t win.

Siegel had won the girls’ team championship Wednesday.

The Smiths beat Rossview’s Yuki Noguchi and Louise Powers 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

McMinn County seniors Michael Hewgley and Neal Baldwin fell to Science Hill’s Drew Kerr and John Storie in a quarterfinal, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. In his first Fling appearance, Walker Valley senior Nathan Kiser lost 6-0, 6-0 to two-time defending champion Ian Chadwell of Centennial.

Ooltewah’s Caroline Denton finished her high school career with a 6-0, 6-1 quarterfinal loss to Houston’s Allison Hoges, one of the South’s top USTA junior players.

“She was a phenomenal player; there’s just no other way to put it,” Denton said. “It was a good way to end my career, playing just an incredible player. There’s just not much you can do.”
