Tennessee: Baylor, McCallie take second, third

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — With one event remaining, the 4x400 relay, the Baylor School boys’ track team was on the verge of claiming the Division II state championship just one night after its girls had won a title.

However, Brentwood Academy won that event to retain its championship with 117 total points to Baylor’s 108. McCallie finished third with 93.5.

“That’s as good as we could have done,” Baylor coach Bill McMahan said. “I can’t complain about anything we did today. We had some kids do some amazing things, and that’s all you can ask.”

Red Raiders junior Bill Matthews won the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter runs. Matthews began the second lap of the two-lap 800 near the back of the pack but took the lead on the backstretch and pulled away.

“Three in one day, I can’t complain about that,” Matthews said. “I knew I had put in the work this year and had the heart. That second lap of the 800 is all about who wants it the most. I was just trying to help us score as many points as a team as I could.”

Wesley Idlette, who had finished second in the decathlon earlier in the week, won the 300-meter hurdles and was second in the 110 hurdles for Baylor.

“I knew what everybody could run, but I just blocked that out and concentrated on running my pace,” Idlette said.

McCallie was led by D.J. Cochran, who won the triple jump and was second in the long jump and third in the 400. Evan Ellison finished second in the 100 and 400 and fourth in the 200.

“I’m not disappointed at all,” said Ellison, who had won the 400 as a sophomore. “Today was all about team points. I ran about as well as I could, so I’ll take what happened.”
