Sen. Lamar Alexander’s winning margin over Democrat Bob Tuke reflects that of a Chattanooga Times Free Press poll conducted in September, which gave the incumbent Republican a lead of 57-33 percent.
With 72 percent of precincts in Tennessee reporting so far tonight, Sen. Alexander leads Mr. Tuke, 68-29 percent, though heavily Democratic Memphis has yet to be counted.
Independents leaned heavily toward Sen. Alexander in the poll, 66 percent to 21 percent.
The poll of 600 registered and likely Tennessee voters was conducted Sept. 21-24 and includes a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.
In the presidential race, the poll found Tennesseans favoring Republican John McCain over Democrat Barack Obama, 55-39 percent.
With the same 72 percent of precincts reporting in Tennessee so far, Sen. McCain leads Sen. Obama, 61-38 percent.
