File Photo by Angela Lewis -- The U.S. Postal Service's Remote Encoding Center at Eastgate will be closing in April of next year.

The U.S. Postal Service has announced it will shut its remote encoding center in Chattanooga in April 2009 with 391 of the employees having to seek other jobs.

The service said 145 career postal employees at the center and 15 supervisors will be assigned to other postal positions.

“The remote encoding centers were designed as a temporary solution to automate and expedite the processing of handwritten and poorly printed addresses,” said Carolyn Chambers, district manager for the U.S. Postal Service’s Tennessee district. “ The plan from the start was to downsize the REC operation as technology enhancements enabled us to automate more mail.” In 1994, the Chattanooga center and 54 other ones were established.

The 391 temporary employees losing their jobs will receive outplacement counseling to assist them find new jobs, a news release said.

as much as I would hate to see all these people lose their jobs they should count their blessings. That place was GROSS. I saw people wipe snot and nasty stuff all over the keyboards and everyone was always sick because of it. NASTY. Since finding a new job 2 years ago I've not been sick ONCE. Good Riddance.

How dare you say such a thing. I worked there for 5 years. Got sick one time... from a flu shot. There was enough alcohol swabbing going on in that place on the keyboards over the coarse of a workday I'm surprised any germ could survive. I'm sure the people wondering what to do now really appreciate your sympathy.

I hope someone can help me. I worked as a DCO for the Tampa REC from 2002-2007. When I left, they gave me a general reference letter, which I have lost. I need to redo my resume & do not have any contact names or phone numbers to use on my resume. When I left in 2007, many of the DCO's (career employees) moved to the Chattanooga area to continue work there. I was unable to make the move. Any help u can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
