Susan Pierce: Big Yawn! After three months of fabulous photos and consistent praise from the judges, McKey Sullivan wins “America’s Next Top Model.” Didn’t we see that coming weeks ago?
Christine Simmons: Yes, it was obvious that she was going to win (and by the way her real name is Brittany, not quite as high fashion as “McKey” is it?)
This was probably one of the most uneventful seasons since the show’s inception. There were not even any good catfights among the girls. The photo shoots and challenges were pretty much the same as previous seasons, and the makeovers were pretty typical.
Susan: I guess I’m just a sucker for the underdog, but I really hoped Analeigh Tipton would win. She had such a natural beauty, fresh face and an innate grace, the latter a result of years of ice-skating training. But I knew when she totally blanked on her lines in the Cover Girl commercial shoot, she had made her last trip down a catwalk.
Christine: Analeigh was just precious ... I was really rooting for her. Speaking of catwalks Susan, neither girl had the walk down. By the time they get to the final show the girls should be able to do the ‘horse walk’ in their sleep. I was shocked that in the final show Tyra was still having to coach the girls on how to walk in heels. Especially McKey, who said she had been modeling since she was 15 years old.
Susan: And speaking of walks, maybe the only surprise was that the show allowed Jay Manuel’s original runway to be used in the finale.
The long, twisting, hotpink walkway included 3-foot hills that forced models to run up the sides — in their stilletos — to get any traction so as not to slide off.
As my mother used to say, that’s “an accident waiting to happen,” not to mention that I got so caught up watching the finalists navigate those hills that I didn’t even notice the clothes they were modeling.
That episode of “Sex and the City” kept flashing into my mind where Carrie falls on the runway during Fashion Week and Stanford Blatch exclaims, “Oh my God, she’s fashion road-kill!”
