Unum sales consultant Steve Anderson, 57, walks to save his life.

“I’ve had high blood pressure all my life, but I’ve never respected the fact it could kill me,” Mr. Anderson said.

Saturday more than 500 participants are expected for the Tennessee Valley Start! Heart Walk at AT&T Field.

Each year 1.2 million Americans will suffer a coronary attack and 700,000 will have a stroke, said Heart Association spokesman Stan Gibert.

To avoid gastric Lap-Band surgery last January, Mr. Anderson signed up for Weight Watchers and began walking two miles a day in January. Today he’s lost 80 pounds, with 50 more to go.

“I thought exercise was a waste of time, now I work out at the gym and walk two miles every day,” Mr. Anderson said.

Kim Lett, a dietitian at HealthSouth Chattanooga Rehabilitation Hospital, said her company joined the Heart Walk to fight back.

“We see firsthand the results of heart disease — it can devastate lives,” she said.

To boost heart health, she said, quit smoking, eat nutritious food and take 10,000 steps — about 5 miles — every day.
