Chattanooga: Baby sitter charged in infant’s death
A Chattanooga woman was arrested Thursday in connection with the May death of a 2-month-old infant whom she was baby-sitting.
Regina Corbin, 36, was booked into the Hamilton County Jail on charges of felony murder and aggravated child abuse in connection with the death of Kissaunti Grier, who died of multiple blunt-force injuries, Chattanooga Police Department spokeswoman Lt. Kim Noorbergen said.
Ms. Corbin is scheduled to appear Oct. 17 in Hamilton County Criminal Court, according to court records.
Chattanooga police responded May 30 to the 2200 block of East 24th Street Court on a call of cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts in progress on a 2-month-old baby. The infant had been left with Ms. Corbin, her baby sitter, at about 1:30 p.m. while the baby's mother was at work, police said.
When the mother returned home about 9 p.m., she found the baby unresponsive, Lt. Noorbergen said.
The baby was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival, police said. An autopsy performed May 31 revealed the infant had sustained multiple blunt-force injuries, Lt. Noorbergen said.
Police have investigated the incident as a homicide since May, as is procedure for almost all undetermined deaths, said Sgt. Bill Phillips, head of the homicide division. Investigators waited to pursue charges until more evidence was discovered and long-term tests performed to determine certain types of injuries, he said.
“Then, because of the results of some tests, we had to go back and interview some people and get additional information because of new information we had learned,” Sgt. Phillips said.
The homicide brings the city’s total for 2008 to 15.
