BROADWAY MUSICALS highlight this year’s TAPA series

This year’s Tivoli Auditorium Promotion Association lineup features a familiar classic, a relatively new hit, an edgy, dark show and an old-fashioned “fun show.”

They are all national touring musicals, and between them they’ve earned two dozen Tony Awards.

Opening the season will be “Sweeney Todd” on Thursday. “Annie” will follow on Nov. 25, with “Movin’ Out” rolling in Dec. 12. “Hairspray” closes out the season on Jan. 31.

“Sweeney Todd’ will be staged at the Tivoli Theatre, and the remaining three will be presented at Memorial Auditorium.

“They are all musicals, but they are all really different,” said TAPA president and presenter David Johnson.

“ ‘Sweeney Todd’ is kind of a dark comedy, and it is certainly edgy. It’s probably not something you bring children to.

“ ‘Annie’ is a fan favorite with great songs people know. ‘Movin’ Out’ is a mix of Billy Joel music and Twyla Tharp choreography and might reach the nonregular theatergoer and the dance fans.

“ ‘Hairspray,’ he said, “is just a fun musical.”
